Try Not to Cut Your Finger

Today I had an accident. Let’s discuss.

Earlier today I was cutting vegetables for jambalaya tonight. The recipe I had called for a good amount of veggies, as is the case with any jambalaya I assume. As I hunkered down to get the prep work done, after cooking the andouille, I started in the veggie prep. I grabbed my bell peppers and one cut into the first one, I nicked my left index finger. I didn't think much of it at the time, but then I noticed some blood pooling on my hand. I looked down and saw that the cut was starting to drip. Luckily none of it got into the veggies, but it was enough to make me stop and clean the cut and grab a band aid.

As I went along with the rest of the veggie prep, I noticed it was more difficult than normal. Cutting veggies and stuff isn't normally difficult, just time consuming. I got a bit of both today. I'm a right handed person, but I use my left hand to control food while slicing and dicing it. The nick in my finger was making this a problem. I naturally just started to move my left hand for fear of cutting it again. The cuts weren't as uniform as normal. Some pieces of pepper were bigger than others. Then I started to feel the heartbeat in my cut. This caused me to shift focus. I wasn't paying enough attention to the primary stuff that needed the right attention. My mind wandered. Every new veggie gave me the thought of possibly cutting myself again. I was intent on the heartbeat in my finger. I lost track of cook times and getting everything in the right place. This was making my OCD kind of go through the roof. I hunkered down and gave the food enough focus so I could finish the job.

Everything tasted fine. After cleaning up my mess, re-cleaning my cut and dressing it for the second time, I sat down to write this. And this is causing issues with my finger now. I'm having to constantly go back and fix more grammar and spelling mistakes than I'm used to. If I hit the keys in a weird way, I fear blood may come from my cut, which is no longer bleeding mind you. I keep looking at the new bandaid and focusing on that.  My kids are interested in it. It is a pain.

I guess what I've come here to say today is, even with a minor cut on your finger, a nick from a knife can do damage. It's a frustrating thing that I should be used to by now. When I started working as a teenager I worked in sandwich/bagel shops. I've cut my finger a million times. But with each new cut comes some form of OCD that will take away from what's important. I know this cut will heal within a day or two, but I'm going to be heavily focused on it until then. I have a basketball practice tonight that I'm running and I cannot fathom what kind of nonsense will occur with this cut. The practice isn't for another five hours, but here I sit already annoyed.

These are minor inconveniences that I shouldn't be griping about here. I want everyone in California to be okay and I'm sick of the snow that is blanketing the midwest right now. But, I feel like because of these other things, any little unnecessary thing that frustrates me is going to be heightened. And this cut has definitely put me in a mood. I know it will be fine and I'll be fine. I guess I just wanted to vent to everyone as opposed to just my wife and kids. Little cuts from knives are avoidable, but when it happens and it causes a communication breakdown, it can be very frustrating.

Thoughts on Jimmy Butler's Last Days in Miami

It appears Jimmy Butler's time on the Miami Heat is going to come to an end. He has asked for a trade, the team has suspended him for "conduct detrimental to the team", he has been very candid about wanting out and it just seems like a matter of time now.

I'm conflicted here. I love Jimmy Butler. He is one of my modern day favorite players. I like how aggressive he is on defense, everywhere he goes he helps that team win and become relevant, he has been to multiple finals and all star games and it appears he makes good coffee. But, the reasons that have been floated about as to why he wants out makes no sense to me.

I guess, from what has been reported, he didn't like the way Pat Riley called him out during last year's playoff run. Butler missed the first round, where the Celtics took the Heat down in five games, and he said that had he been out there it would have been different. Riley must have heard this and said something along the lines of, he needs to be on the court to prove what he says. It all seems very mild and mundane to me. Butler doesn't seem like the type of guy that would get too riled up about comments like that. Riley is also a known asshole. He always has been and always will be. But, what made this partnership so promising, and it almost paid off, was the fact that these two guys were pretty much the same. They both want the same things when it comes to basketball. I assumed Butler would finish his career with the Heat. I thought he would ride off into the Miami sunset and start a whole chain of coffee shops within the Miami area post basketball. But I guess that is not the way it's going to end. I still don't know that the comments from Riley were the only reason he wants out, but who's to say.

When I pull back and look at who might be able to trade for him, it's slim pickings. The Heat are going to go about this like they always do. They will want the deal that best suits them. They aren't going to trade him just because he wants out. This has nothing to do with representation or "trying to do right" by a player. The Heat want to be relevant and they want to compete. Butler may have preferred destinations, it seems like Phoenix is his number one spot, but if the deal from the Suns doesn't get better, the Heat aren't just going to trade him to get rid of him. I know the Heat have said they don't want Bradley Beal, and that makes sense to me. He isn't the player he once was, and he is so often injured. But other than Beal, the Suns cannot offer much. They don't have picks or any young guys that could be intriguing. I saw the Grizzlies were interested, and I got hyped on this news. It wasn't too much later that Butler publicly said he doesn't want to play there. I wish that weren't true. I think Butler would be a fine addition to the Grizz. I'd love to see a starting five of Ja, Desmond Bane, Butler, JJJ and Zach Edey. I love that lineup. And the Grizz could give the Heat picks and younger, more intriguing guys. Maybe Butler will reverse course on Memphis. I saw the Warriors had minimal interest, but that has seemed to wane. They cannot part with too much talent if they want to stay competitive, and they don't have much in the way of picks. Outside those three possible contenders, not too many other deals make sense. Denver doesn't need him. Neither do the Thunder. The Cavs are cruising with their core guys and they seem to have it all figured out. The Hawks are going young. The Knicks are set and the Magic are too young for him. The Mavs and Clippers could make a push, but they'd have to give up too much in my opinion. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, but Memphis makes the most sense to me, next to the Suns. The Grizzlies have better assets and appear to be a better team.

Time will tell, but I'm interested to see how this all plays out.

The Patriots Were Wrong to Let Jerod Mayo Go

The Patriots relieved Jerod Mayo after one season as the head coach. Let’s discuss.

This is a bad, bad look for this franchise. I don't know anyone, including super fans and even members of the team that thought the Patriots would be a playoff threat this season. This had rebuild written all over it. The rebuild kind of started in Bill Belicheck's final season. They were worse that year than they were this year. They seem to like the QB they drafted in Drake Maye, but this was going to take time and I don't think Mayo got a fair shot. I was kind of stunned when I saw the headline after it was announced. I remember saying to RD that they need to give him time, that this was going to be a process. I believe I said that to him on a podcast record. But, for some inexplicable reason, the Patriots now find themselves in search of a new head coach.

I don't really know what Mayo did wrong either. They came out in week one and beat the Bengals in Cincy. That's a pretty big deal if you ask me. We all saw how both teams finished, but that was a big win. The Patriots also seemed to like playing for Mayo. The defense was better than it had any right to be. They have some pieces there and it seemed to click with Mayo running the show. The offense was bad, but again, it was a bunch of young dudes seeing massive amounts of playing time. It didn't take Maye too long before he supplanted Jacoby Brissett. Rhamondre Stevenson has issues with fumbling, but he is also an okay enough running back. Maybe he shouldn't be a starter though. The receivers are not good. They've tried to take chances, but nothing has worked out yet. How this collection of players managed to scrape together four wins is amazing to me, and I give a ton of that credit to Mayo for having them prepared to play. It has to be demoralizing stepping onto a pro football field knowing that almost every other team has better talent than the Patriots do. But Mayo and his staff, at the very least, had them ready to go out there and put up a fight. They're also going to be drafting high in the upcoming draft, one full of talent, and that should have been exactly what the fans and front office of the Patriots expected. Hell, I'd say they should have been ecstatic at the fact that they have a top five pick.

When I pull back and look at it, Mayo did the best he could with what he inherited, and he had this team going in the right direction. They have a QB they like. They have a defense that seemed capable at times. They were going to get a very, very good college football player to come in and hopefully help right away. The o line wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. A rebuild takes time and the Patriots were just getting started. Mayo deserved much more of a shot. Hell, he definitely deserved more than one season. And to see Robert Kraft say that he felt the team "regressed" under Mayo is nonsense. Kraft gave him nothing and expected the world out of him at his first try as a head coach.

I hope Jerod Mayo catches on elsewhere and gets a real shot again as an NFL head coach. This may end up being the best for him. But, it does feel like a slap in the face to a guy that played and coached there and was finally getting his first chance to run a team. People expect too much too quick, especially in the sports world. Jerrod Mayo deserved way more time.

Ty Predicts the NFL Playoffs

The NFL playoffs are set and I'm here today with my playoff predictions and Super Bowl winner. I'll also pick the MVP of the Super Bowl. The one seeds are the Chiefs and Lions, which is not really much of a surprise. There are some teams returning that seemed like they were going to be shooting for a high draft pick as opposed to being back in the playoffs. And for teams like the Bengals, sorry RD, they were too little too late.

I'm going to start with the AFC.

The Chiefs have the bye. The 2-7 matchup features the Bills facing the Broncos. The Broncos are a nice story. Bo Nix has been better than I thought, Sean Payton can coach and the defense is pretty damn good. All that is great, but the Bills are going to roll them. Josh Allen is playing at an MVP level. Their run game has been solid. The defense is as advertised. I also think this Bills team is different. They're playing with a chip on their shoulder. The Bills win big. The 3-6 game has the Ravens and Steelers. The Ravens are surging while the Steelers are tumbling. The Steelers offense is worse than before and the defense is tired. The Ravens are putting up big numbers from Lamar Jackson, once again staking his claim at another MVP, and Derrick Henry has been as good as we all thought he would be when he signed there. The defense had some bumps along the way, but they seem to have righted the ship. The Ravens also get this game and home, and while it may look close for a half, the Ravens should win rather easily. The 4-5 game is intriguing, with the Chargers playing the Texans. I had high hopes for the Texans this season, but they have looked stuck in the mud. The offense isn't as electric and the defense is middling. The Chargers are playing with house money and have been on a tear as of late. Jim Harbaugh is also coming off a NCAA football title where Michigan won that game in Houston. I'm going with the Chargers here. They're playing looser and look to be having way more fun.

So, the second round will have matchups of the Chargers facing the Chiefs and the Bills facing the Ravens. The Chiefs are going to find a way to beat the Chargers. That's what they've done all year. Some miracle incident will occur and they will end up in the AFC title game. The Ravens and Bills game should be epic. This is between the two legit MVP candidates. Both teams play similar styles. Both defenses are gelling at the right time. The coaches seem in the groove. I'm going to give the slight edge to the Bills simply due to home field advantage. It's going to be frigid and the Ravens have a tendency of playing poorly when that happens.

That puts the Bills and Chiefs in the AFC title. This year though, I'm going with the Bills. The Chiefs luck is going to end soon, and this version of the Bills seems more than prepared to take over. I don't care  that the game is in KC, I don't care about postseason records between these two teams, the Bills are the better team and they will show that. The Bills will be the AFC's Super Bowl representative.

On to the NFC.

The Lions cruised against the Vikings last night to secure the 1 seed. The 2-7 game features the Eagles and Packers. I'd love for the Packers to win this game. It would be rad to see Jordan Love go into Philly and steal one. But, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts have been better than advertised. Jaire Alexander is done for the year, so Hurts can beat them through the air. Love's best wideout, Christian Watson, tore his ACL yesterday. I'm all in on this Packers team, just not this year. The Eagles will most likely cruise into round 2. The 3-6 game has the Buccaneers playing the Commanders. I can't really get a feel for this game. The Bucs offense is okay, but inconsistent. The Commanders have a great rookie QB and a solid defense. The coaches are both capable. The game is in Tampa Bay, but I don't think that really matters much. I'm going to go with the Commanders simply based on how great Jayden Daniels has been all year. The kid has shown everyone what he is capable of and I think he continues to do that in this game. The 4-5 game has the Rams playing the Vikings. Give me the Rams all day. I have been really amazed at what the Vikings have done this year, but last night's game was telling. The lights were bright and they no showed. The Rams have veteran leaders and a Super Bowl winning coach. The moment won't be too big for them. I fear it might be for the Vikings though.

In round two we have the Lions playing the Rams and the Eagles facing the Commanders. The Lions are going to lay waste to the Rams. A home playoff game for a franchise that has been this stuck in the mud is going to be electric. The Lions proved they belonged last year, and this year I think they're out for blood. They should show no mercy, and I expect that from them. The Lions roll the Rams. I also feel like the Eagles-Commanders game will be similar. This time the Commanders will be shell shocked. I could see both Barkley and Hurts running for 100 yards. I also think the Eagles defense will shut down Daniels. The second round in the NFC won't be near as much fun as the AFC.

That leaves me with the Lions and Eagles in the NFC title game. This should be epic. I love this matchup. Playing in a dome makes it more likely that it will be a barn burner of a game. This could have a final of 38-35, and I see the Lions coming out on top. They're on a mission this season and they're going to play like it.

That means my Super Bowl is between the Bills and Lions. What a game huh? Are there two fan bases that deserve this more than them? Some fans are going to be thrilled while others will have to still wait on a title. As for which franchise I think will be happy, I'm going with the Bills. This is where the injuries will hurt the Lions. If they were fully healthy maybe I'd think differently. But, they aren't and that means I'm going with the Bills. They have something to prove and I think they finally rise above and do it this season. Josh Allen will also be the go away Super Bowl MVP. I can see him doing something incredible late in the fourth quarter to clinch the win. 

Can’t wait for these playoffs.

Ty Watches "Aaron Rodgers: Enigma"

During the holiday break my family, all of my family that is, went to stay at a nice cabin in a local town to celebrate. During the down times I'd sit and watch tv with my dad. One show we came across was "Enigma" on Netflix. This is the three part documentary series about Aaron Rodgers. It tells the story of his time in the NFL, his injuries, recovery and how he spends his free time.

I've made no bones about my feelings for Rodgers. I despise him. I loathed him when he was the QB for the Packers, was bummed when they drafted him and the whole deal with him now makes me sick to my stomach. This show does the job of showing that side of him, but they glorify him. From moment one I was angry watching this. There's a ton to make you gruffled and angry, but his whole attitude and demeanor is enough to make people dislike him. The way he speaks, how he talks about himself and the people around him is gross. He is always calling himself a "perfectionist". He calls football a "craft". When he goes on his ayahuasca retreat, more on that in a minute, it is the most cliche nonsense you will ever hear in your life.

Now, full disclosure, I only watched one and a half episodes. I had to call it midway through the second one because it was making me visibly angry to my family. I went and played pickleball to wash the taste of this terrible show out of my mouth. But, what I did see, what I gathered from almost two hours of tv, Aaron Rodgers is a prick. I think my dad said it best when he said, "Aaron Rodgers is going to die an angry, sad and lonely person". That is the best way to put it. When he talks on this show it is all about him and all about his wants and needs. He backtalks trainers. He explains away why he can't have any romantic partners. He makes mentions to his family in the past tense. He "thanks" them for treating him like he was soft when he was a kid. When he has people over to watch games with him, we never see them and it is never any of his teammates or people he works alongside with. During the ayahuasca retreat, he is there solo. No one wants to come with him. When they're in a big drum circle, he seems like he is lonely. When they go into the tent to sweat out their toxins, explaining that they're using nature's medicine, which is nonsense, I go run outside to sweat out a cold, he doesn't interact with anyone outside of the tent. He doesn't let people in because he seems to know that he will push them away. There was a scene where he went to a doctor and he basically ran the show. Everyone around was telling him that he wasn't going to play that year, but he kept insisting. His insistence looked like such a heavy weight that one of the people he was with just sighed and kind of gave in. They didn't want to fight anymore. That is how some people deal with toddlers, but Rodgers is a fully grown adult. I found him to be miserable and boring. When he and RFK went on a hike together and talked politics it was one of the dumbest conversations to ever be recorded. RFK and Aaron Rodgers are two of the dumbest, wannabe smart guys around. When that moment happened, that was a telling sign to me that I wouldn't be finishing this show. I found it abhorrent and thought it was glorifying this mean and gross person.

I don't know what Rodgers goal was with this show because all it did was make me angry. My dad said it best and I couldn't agree more with his sentiment. Rodgers is a miserable person who will have no one to yell at or tell what to do when he is out of the limelight. I do not recommend this show. Not at all.

Better Late than Never on "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror"

On the heels of seeing Robert Eggers “Nosferatu”, I decided I needed to go back and watch the original from 1922. That one is called “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”.

Now, going into this movie, I knew next to nothing about it. I knew Eggers based his movie on this story and that he used elements and images from the original. I should also mention that my dad told me to watch it as well. He remembered liking it, and his opinion hold a ton of brevity for me.

As I settled into this movie, I didn’t realize what a treat I’d be in for. “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” is a very good movie. I didn’t know it was a silent movie, my first, but that didn’t matter. This movie is scary. I found myself jumping here and there while watching. The actors are so good with their body movements and facial expressions that it’s easy to get context from all of that. There’s also cards that flash that help guide you along the story. The cards have written words on them and they tell anyone who may not know what is going on. Eggers did use the same character names. Ellen and Thomas Hutter are the main characters. These old time actors are great. They do so much without saying a single word. Ellen Hutter is exceptional. She has a lot to do and she nails it. Knock is creepier in the original. He’s small and squirrelly. He’s menacing. He has an odd mouth shape and the actor used it well. The seamen and doctors have the perfect look. But this is truly all about the actor playing Count Orlok. This is the original on film vampire. This guy is creepy as hell. His whole aura had me scared. From his hair to his teeth to his fingers, it’s all a great vampire look. He also makes some great facial expressions and really goes for it. Watching him float in and out of scenes was wild. Seeing him carrying a coffin was nuts.

This was so worth going back to see where this idea all started. There’s a real reason why this is considered one of the great scary movies. The music and tone are perfect. The actors are great. The scenery is eerie and well used. It’s an achievement when you realize this movie is over 100 years old. I cannot get over how much I liked this movie. I’m not the biggest fan of older movies, but this one has made me rethink that and now I want to go back and watch some more. If you like Eggers “Nosferatu”, go watch “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”. You’ll love it ad much as I did. I also recommend seeing it anyway because it’s pretty damn good.

Bo Nix and the Vikings are the Surprises of the NFL Season

Today I have come to eat crow on two NFL things I wrote in my preseason preview from earlier in 2024. Let’s go.

The first comes from my 2024 draft preview. In lieu of doing picks one by one, I always talk about five prospects I like and five I think have the most bust probability. In my five busts part, I was pretty certain that Bo Nix was going to flame out and flame out fast. I even doubled down on it when the Broncos named him the starter for the season and released Russell Wilson. Nix has proven me very, very wrong. He is a more than capable starting QB in the NFL. He is not going to be the ROY or the MVP, not by a long shot. But Nix has proven himself to be far more than just a game manager. The Broncos may not have won their game the other night, but it wasn't due to Nix playing poorly. He kept them in the game from start to finish. He made play after play. He went toe to toe with Joe Burrow. And I understand that the Bengals defense is porous, but Nix has done this all year. He led a drive that should have led to a game winning field goal earlier this season against the Chiefs. He has won games from the start for the Broncos. He has done everything he has been asked to do by his staff, and the Broncos, while not a Super Bowl caliber team yet, seems to have found their starting QB for the next five to ten years depending on health. I thought he was going to look like most rookie QB's who are thrust into a starting role, but he has looked confident and capable. I'll be interested to see if this trend continues over the next few years, but I'd be shocked if he didn't improve over the seasons and become a pro bowl level NFL starting QB. I was wrong about him.

The other thing, and I was very aligned with a ton of people on this one, I thought the Vikings were going to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, and I thought they had the makings of one of the worst teams in NFL history. I looked at their offseason, who they got rid of, who they traded up to draft and who they signed to be their veteran QB and it all screamed two or three wins, at most to me. I was also not a firm believer in Kevin O'Connell as a NFL head coach. I told RD as much via text and conversations while recording the podcast. He is a Vikings fan, I'm a Packers fan, and I think maybe he even thought that the Vikings were going to be awful too. I was even more certain when they traded up to nine to draft Michigan QB JJ McCarthy. I adore that kid. He helped Michigan win the title last year. But, Michigan was all about their top tier defense and their excellent run game. McCarthy could make plays here and there, but that team won as a team, not because of their QB. But, when the NFL season started, not only were the Vikings winning, they were beating the snot out of their opponents. I figured it was just an early season surprise and they would come crashing back down to Earth soon. But that never happened. The Vikings are still killing it. They're playing for the number one seed in the NFC this Sunday. Sam Darnold has been great. He will be getting paid this offseason. Aaron Jones has been mostly healthy and playing well. Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson are amazing, and Jefferson may be the best wideout in the NFL. But it is their defense that has been the big surprise and main reason why they've been able to sustain their high level of play. Brian Flores has done a masterful job with a defense that doesn't have any real stars. He has gotten the best out of that unit and he is more than deserving of a shot at being a head coach again. I'm astonished at how well they have played all season, and I am going to give most of that credit to Flores for putting them in the best position possible. As for O'Connell, he has earned my respect, not that he really cares. He has what it takes to be a NFL head coach, and what he has done with Sam Darnold is more proof that he is a "QB whisperer". The Vikings, as stated a few sentences ago, have a shot at the 1 seed. I assumed they'd be more likely to pick first overall in the upcoming draft. And as much as it stings to say this being a Packers fan, the Vikings are legit and they terrify me heading to the playoffs. They're a damn good football team with an excellent defense.

Ty Watches "Nosferatu"

I'm a Robert Eggers fan. I have three of his four movies now, and all 3 I have enjoyed very much. Last week my dad and I decided we were going to see "Nosferatu". We try to see a movie during the holiday season and this was one that we both wanted to see. I had high expectations because I love "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman" is one of the coolest movies that has ever been made. The early reviews were also very favorable. As we settled in and sat back, I was ready to love Eggers vision for "Nosferatu".

And, it delivered on every level for me as a movie goer. This movie was an absolute homerun. I have only recently seen the original from 1922, and Eggers and crew do that movie some solid justice. The story is pretty much the same, but they added dialogue and made it a little more understandable. We also get to see Count Orlok early on in this movie, and we get to hear his horrifying voice. Bill Skarsgaard does an admirable job as the Count. He plays him menacingly and unforgiving. He is a truly wretched being, and Skarsgaard nailed it. I am more impressed with each role I see him in. He is a good actor and he seems to have found his niche in Hollywood. Lily Rose Depp is undeniably great as Ellen, the one whom Orlok is obsessed with. She is pitch perfect here. The convulsions and visions also felt very real to me. Depp never dives into cliche stuff with this role. She embodies this sickness and it shows on screen. Nicholas Hoult is very good as the husband. You buy his naivete at first, but then when he encounters Orlok, his whole outlook on the world changes, and Hoult embraces the madness incredibly well. You can see the agony and fear on his face when he goes to sell the Count the new home he is purchasing. Aaron Taylor Johnson and Emma Corrin give very good performances as the married couple friends of the Hutter's, who take on Ellen when Thomas is sent away. They have a family and a life, but all that is on hold when Ellen comes to stay with them. You see their grief and frustration. Ralph Ineson, a buddy of Eggers I presume, is wonderful as the doctor trying to help Ellen with her issues, but he won't buy into the occult. Instead, he enlists his former professor, played excellently by Willem Defoe, to take on the patient. Defoe is magnetic. I loved every single second he was on screen. Defoe is one of my favorite actors, and he is more than game for this role in this movie. From his dusty jacket to acting with live rats, Defoe nails it here. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Simon McBurney as Knock. He is Orlok's pet so to speak. Everything he does is in service to Orlok, and he will go to great lengths to get the job done.

Outside of the cast, the cinematography and the story are dynamite. There are some shots in this movie that are impeccable. When Hutter meets the chariot that takes him to the castle at a fork in the road, that was an amazing shot. Every time we get more of a glimpse of Orlok, it gets spookier and spookier. The castles are big and beautiful to look at on screen. The story is simple enough, but the actors have totally bought in and they really sell it to the viewer. I was on the edge of my seat the entire two plus hour long runtime. I didn't want to miss a thing. For as gross and gory as some of the stuff in the movie was, it was all needed to move along the plot and let us know why we were in certain situations.

"Nosferatu" is truly an achievement and a movie I think a lot of people should see on a big screen. I cannot recommend this movie enough.

The World, and Baseball, Was Better with Rickey Henderson in It.

Welcome back everyone. I decided to take a week off for the holidays, but I'm back and ready to write. Unfortunately, I'm starting the week off on a sad note. The family and I were hanging out when I got a notification on my phone that Rickey Henderson had passed away.

I couldn't believe it. I had no idea he was sick or anywhere close to passing. He seemed like he was okay. I saw him catch the opening pitch from his daughter at The Coliseum earlier this season. But, now he is gone.

This one has hit me pretty rough. I know I dog on baseball on this site a lot now, but when I was a kid I loved baseball. I also loved Rickey Henderson. He was so fast. I had never seen anyone move on the base path like him. I am too young for Lou Brock, and I was only coming into my own during Whitey Ball, with guys like Vince Coleman and Willie McGee stealing bases left and right. Henderson was my first experience with a baseball player that, if you let him on base, he was going to swipe a bag or two. I instantly fell in love with his base stealing ability. But then I started to really watch him, and the A's, and I loved his game even more. Henderson was the type of player that could lead the game off with a homer. Or, he would slap a sharp line drive to the outfield for a single, then turn that into a triple or a double. He was also boisterous and talkative, which I had zero issues with as a kid. I liked it. I liked how sure of himself he was when he was on a ball field. There's many famous quotes from Henderson, but the one I go back to all the time is, "I don't care that John hit .316, Rickey hits .330". He didn't know the whole verse or anything that the fan was trying to say, all Henderson knew, which was so rad, was he was a better hitter than John. That was one of the best things I will ever remember about him. He was also a great outfielder to go along with his hitting. He could track a flyball with the best of them. He had a pretty good arm. He was smart and knew how to get to the baseball if he needed to catch it. He ended his career with a .279 career batting average, had over 3,000 hits, had over 1,100 RBI's and stole over 1,400 bases. He was the best base stealer to ever do it in the pros. He was a ten time all star, won two World Series titles. won an MVP and is, of course, enshrined in the MLB Hall of Fame. His number 24 is also retired by the Oakland Athletics. Henderson did all that anyone could ever want from a pro ball player, and he did it his way with his style. Some may say that they were "rubbed the wrong way" by him, but I don't buy it. You either bought in or you were left out. I would have loved to play the game of baseball with someone like Henderson. He loved it so much and he brought out the best in his teammates. He wouldn't let you slack either. You had better be all in if you were his teammate. I love that.

This one is tough. Henderson was young, 64 years old. He was about to celebrate his 65th birthday before he passed. I guess he had pneumonia, and it got the best of him unfortunately. Henderson is going to be missed by many, many people, myself included. Rest in Peace Rickey Henderson. I hope you're stealing bases wherever you may be right now.

"Scrooged" is the Best Movie for the Holiday Season

Today I have an idea that I have been thinking about for quite some time now. There are a ton of holiday movies, and since we are in some holidays and almost at some other holidays this time of year, I have finally come up with what I consider to be the best Xmas movie. My family has celebrated Xmas my entire life, so the holiday movies I watch this time of year center primarily around Xmas. I have seen all the hits. I love "Elf", "Home Alone", "A Christmas Story", to name a few. I have also enjoyed some more modern holiday movies. I found myself really liking "Happiest Season", which was just released last year. But there's one movie I consistently go back to this time of year. It is my comfort food for Xmas. It lets me know that we are fully in the Xmas season.

The best holiday/Xmas movie, for me, is "Scrooged". "Scrooged" gets it totally right. From start to finish this movie is damn near perfect. I have no notes for it. First of all, the cast is dynamite. Bill Murray is perfectly cast as Frank Cross. He is the Scrooge here. He is a cynical executive who despises the holiday season. While it could've been cliche or phoned in, Murray's attitude as Cross is perfect. This is what I imagine Murray acts like in his real life. It wasn't too much of a stretch for him and he totally nails it. Karen Allen is his love interest, Claire Phillips. She is wonderful here. She's light and cheery. She embodies the people who live for this season. But, where she could have played this as constantly happy, she nails the little drama moments. She also plays unhappy, in the alternate universes, very well. Allen is such an underrated actor. And this role, for me, is her tour de force. I come away even more impressed by her performance with each new watch. The ghosts that visit Cross are well played too. David Johansen as the ghost of Xmas past is great. I love that he plays the role as a cabby. I love how gross his cigar is that he's constantly chomping on. I like how he has no problem showing Cross all of his past problems. I really love this role. Carol Kane is as perfectly cast as Murray is in this movie. She plays the Ghost of Xmas Present. What makes her so electrifying in this movie is how evil and mean she is. She is constantly hitting Cross. She is trying to wack some common sense into this hate filled, awful man. She pulls no punches and she is willing to literally harm him to try and get him to see the error of his ways. And Pat McCormick, the Ghost of Xmas Future, shines in his small role. He doesn't get a ton to work with, but he really adds some much needed drama to this comedy movie. These five are great, but some of the side characters are awesome too. Bobcat Goldthwait is excellent as the disgruntled co-worker. John Glover seems nice, but reveals his sliminess eventually. Robert Mitchum is a scrooge himself. Alfre Woodard is electric as the studio head with a young kid. I mean, this cast is amazing.

What makes me really think this is the best holiday movie, they get the tone perfectly. This movie portrays how gloomy and dark the holiday season can be. It shows cynicism better than any other holiday movie. But it also has a heart. After the ghosts visit Cross, this movie has a ton of heart. It's almost too gloomy for a bit there, but then the writers, actors and director nail how cheery and fun the holiday season can be. Murray, after seeing all three ghosts, is so happy that his crew is taken aback for a moment. They don't trust his happiness because of who he is. But, in the long run, they buy it and go along with it. And I love that.

The holiday season can be good and bad and "Scrooged" tells the best version of that real life situation. I'm sure everyone will have their opinions as to why I'm wrong, and that's okay. Please, tell me why. But, for me, "Scrooged" totally nails the feelings and attitude that this season brings. And I love it so much for that.

Ty's 2024 College Football Playoff Preview

The College Football Playoff starts tomorrow night and I cannot wait. Even without Michigan playing in the CFP this year, I'll still be tuning in. I will watch Michigan's bowl game, as always. But, with the new format, I'm pretty stoked to see how it all plays out. I love that the first round is being played in college stadiums, I love that the games are on in primetime and I cannot wait to watch it all unfold. With all that, I'm going to do a preview and prediction. The games will be here before we know it, so on with it.

The first playoff game is tomorrow night, with Indiana traveling to South Bend to face Notre Dame. I have seen Indiana play this year, and while a deserving playoff team, I don't think they have much of a chance tomorrow night. Their offense has stalled as of late. I know they scored 66 points in their rivalry game, but Purdue is not a very good football team right now. Indiana's two previous games, Michigan and the university of Ohio State, weren't so great. The university of Ohio State ran roughshod over them, and Michigan, who was not very good this year, had a shot to win that game in Bloomington. Notre Dame has a very stout defense, a great running game and a passing attack capable of taking advantage of a weak Indiana secondary. I'll be rooting for the Big 10 here, but Notre Dame is the better team and they have home field advantage.

The first game to kickoff Saturday morning features SMU traveling to Penn State. Penn State should win this game and win it relatively easily. They have a better defense, better run game and a QB that rarely makes mistakes. SMU can run the ball okay, but I don't trust much more from them, especially after watching them in the ACC title game. But, we have the whole James Franklin of it all here. He is a poor big game coach. It doesn't matter if he has home field advantage, if he has the refs and media on his side or if he even has the better roster. He seems to flub this stuff way more often than not. But, I'm going to go with Penn State in a low scoring, ugly game. What SMU did in the ACC title game has been hard for me to shake.

The 3pm central game has Clemson facing Texas. Texas is going to win and going to win convincingly in my opinion. Clemson is not the Clemson of old. They barely made the playoff. Their QB is wildly inefficient. The defense isn't as feared as they used to be. Texas, on the other hand, has an elite defense. Their run game is effective. And the duo of Quin Ewers and Arch Manning is going to give defenses tons of headaches in these playoffs. Texas should win this one going away, and I fully expect that. I wouldn't be surprised if they win by three or more scores.

The final first round playoff game is the best first round game. Tennessee faces off with the university of Ohio State. In years past this would've been an easy university of Ohio State pick for me. They have the best roster money can buy. They have weapons all over the field. They have one of the top defenses in the country. They have a highly effective run game. What worries me, their QB and coaching staff. Tennessee is kind of playing with house money here. Their defense is also legit, except on the outside. Their offense isn't as elite as in the past, and that is what worries me most with this team. This game is going to be a slug fest. And, as much as I'd love to see Tennessee win and plant their flag at the 50 yard line, I have this weird feeling that the university of Ohio State is going to get a break and win this on a last minute field goal.

The second round games, the elite 8 if you will, have Texas facing Arizona State, Penn State playing Boise State, Notre Dame facing Georgia and the university of Ohio State playing Oregon. Again, Texas got a great draw and they are going to walk over Arizona State. ASU is a nice story and it's rad that they made this big of a leap in year two of Kenny Dillingham's leadership. Their running back is also damn good. But Texas is so much better in every facet except running back. And Texas has a deep group of backs they can rotate. ASU may keep it close for a half, but then Texas should have an easy path to the final four.

I am going with Boise State, in a minor upset, to beat Penn State. Boise State has one of the greatest college running backs ever. Ashton Jeanty is a force of nature and I love watching him play. He's fierce and fast. He is not afraid of anyone. He will run you over and run by you. The rest of the offense is capable and the defense is fine. This is where James Franklin will find some way to blow it and all the PSU fans will be in agony once again. I really like this Boise State team.

Notre Dame-Georgia is going to be a fun game. If Carson Beck were healthy, I'd pick Georgia. But, Georgia's defense hasn't been nearly as dominant as in the past. The run game is hit or miss. The passing game, especially with Gunner Stockton running the show, is going to be nearly nonexistent. This all plays into Notre Dame's favor. They can slow this game down, make it a slugfest and they have the much better defense. I'm going with Notre Dame beating my preseason pick to win it all.

Finally, for the second round, we have the university of Ohio State facing Oregon. Oregon won this game once this season, by one, but that was earlier in the year. This version of Oregon is better and hungrier. They seem angrier too. They easily handled PSU in the Big Ten title game, and they don't want the accolades to stop there. This offense is one of the better balanced offenses in the country. They're fast everywhere. The defense is as good as Oregon has ever had. I just don't see a world where Oregon doesn't win this game.

That leaves me with a final four of Oregon, Notre Dame, Boise State and Texas. I think Notre Dame is going to beat Boise State. I think this is where the Cinderella run ends for BSU and Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty will have a good game, but Notre Dame can match their energy and I think they have an advantage with their defense.

The real title game for me is Oregon and Texas. These are, in my opinion, the two best teams in college football by a quarter mile. This game will be fast, exciting and an absolute feast for college football fans, In the end, in a minor shootout, I have Oregon winning this game and going to the championship.

This game, featuring Notre Dame and Oregon, will be a coronation for Oregon. It has all led to this for them, and I don't think they'll let their fans down this year. Oregon has all the tools they need to win it all, and I think they do just that this January.

Vick as a College Coach Makes Sense

I read earlier in the week that some smaller schools were looking at Mike Vick as a candidate at head coach for them. I didn't know he was actively looking and interviewing for a job, but I like it. Let’s discuss.

I have been a lifelong Mike Vick fan. From his time at Virginia Tech to his stops in the NFL, most memorably with the Falcons, I always enjoyed watching him play football. He reminded me so much of Randall Cunningham, who I also was a big fan of. But, he had a better arm and was so much faster than Cunningham ever was when he was in the NFL. Mike Vick didn't disappoint either. He was as good as advertised. He went to the title game with VT, and almost single handedly won it for them. He was the first pick and was awesome from the start. He made the Falcons fun to watch. He made them a playoff team. When he came back from his suspension, he was a star again with the Eagles. That Monday night game, you know what I'm talking about, was a sight to behold. He then ventured off to the Jets to be a backup and finished up his career as a backup once again with the Steelers. There is the prison sentence for his involvement in a dog fighting ring that slowed his career down significantly. What Vick did was wrong, but for him to be locked up was wild. There are things going on with current players that are much, much worse and they barely even get suspended from playing any games. They get to live their lives freely after doing some heinous things. Vick went to jail. He was a prisoner. He served time. He is well past the point of being a "bad guy" anymore. He did what he did, was punished for it and he came back to play at the highest level, and play very well. Now, he is going to be the head coach at Norfolk State.

I don't know much about Norfolk State. I know the university is in Virginia, Vick's home state. I know they're a lower level division 1-AA school. They haven't made a ton of noise lately, but I feel like that's going to change here very soon. I knew of Jackson State prior to Deion Sanders taking the job there. My knowledge of Jackson State while Deion was there and now is much greater because I wanted to know about where he was coaching. I get very similar vibes with Vick at Norfolk State. Kids with parents around my age or even a little younger are going to want their kids to play for Mike Vick. I would absolutely love for my kid to be recruited by him. I'd love to meet him as the parent. I think it would be a true highlight. Just based off that one fact, Norfolk State is going to improve. The school will put money behind him to help with the NIL collective. Vick is going to get kids in the door on name recognition alone. He and his staff will have to develop that talent. and I'm sure they'll be able to do that with no problem at all. Vick knows this game. He has learned from some of the game's smartest pro coaches. He was an electric athlete, and sometimes that works when transitioning to coaching. I have full faith that Vick will do just fine.

Hearing this news today made me so very happy for him. I want more guys like Vick coaching college football. These are the dudes I watched and I want to see them succeed and thrive. I will be more focused on Norfolk State moving forward from here on out. I love this hire and I cannot wait to see what Vick does now that he's a head coach.

"Venom" is a Bad Movie that I Enjoy

While on vacation last week my wife and I were looking for a movie to watch before bed. We wanted a quiet night in our room with a movie we could just vedge out to before going to sleep. We were lucky enough to stumble upon the first "Venom" movie with Tom Hardy.

I do want to say, right off the bat, this is a bad movie. When you look at its bare bones, there's nothing really redeeming or good about it. It's dull, weird and doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's objectively a bad movie. But, in this rewatch, I was astounded at some of the things we both noticed.

First off, this cast is absolutely stacked. Tom Hardy is an award nominee and has won a few here and there. He's a method actor and he takes his work too seriously. I enjoy his acting, but I bet he is a pain to work alongside. Michelle Williams plays his ex. She is an award winner for sure. She is a multiple Oscar nominee. She is in some of the best movies of the 2000's. She was a tv star who made the leap to movies with ease. Riz Ahmed plays the villain. He is a multi time award nominee. His performance in "The Sound of Metal" is one of the best acting performances I've ever seen. He is wonderful in "4 Lions". Ahmed has made one hell of a career for himself. Jenny Slate is a comedy queen. She makes great movies for A24. She is one of the best at portraying the 90's in some of the movies she has been in lately. That is a bunch of heavy hitters in a movie that lives in the "Spiderman" universe, and isn't animated. We were taken aback when we realized this last week.

Another thing we noticed was Hardy's dual role in this movie. He plays Eddie Brock. He is a "rogue" writer. He does the grimy and gritty stories. He wants to expose what he deems to be the bad guys. He and Williams also have pretty good chemistry when they are still a couple in the movie. I buy their made up relationship. Hardy also plays the voice of Venom, and it is wild, wild stuff. Venom is loud and rude. Venom knows what it wants and tells Eddie all this. The two of them actually have back and forth before we even know that Brock is infected with Venom. And on this watch I loved every single second of this dual role. It was hilarious. You can tell that Hardy totally bought in and took this role seriously. He didn't just phone it in. He wanted this role and he wanted people to know that he wanted the role. Some actors would just cash a paycheck while filming this movie. Not Hardy. He bought in. We were both impressed that he was actually going for it in this awful movie.

The last thing we noticed was how sweaty Hardy was the whole time. He looked like he had just run a marathon. And he looked this way pretty much the whole movie. Even before he was Venom, he still had an unkempt, grimy look to him. I attribute this to the fact that Hardy probably didn't want to comb his hair or take a shower while making this movie. I'm not saying he didn't do these things, it just looked that way to us. It was quite the look.

Finally, I cannot emphasize how bad of a movie "Venom" is. But, if you look for some fun things about it, like my wife and I did, you may find yourself enjoying it a bit more. I know we did and it was a much better viewing experience for the both of us.

Thoughts on Bill Belichick Going to UNC

I was on vacation with my wife last week and my son texted me something that truly shocked me. I was hanging out by a pool and I audibly gasped when I read what he sent. I also didn't fully believe him at first. The text read, "Bill Belichick just signed to be the next head coach for UNC!".

I was floored. I had to check some reputable sites, nothing against my kid, but he's 12, he has said lots of stuff that wasn't true. But he was correct. Bill Belichick is returning to coach football, and he isn't doing it in the NFL or at a big time power 5 school. He is going to coach UNC, who was like 6-6 or 7-5 this season. They gave up 70 plus points to James Madison. The entire staff is going to be new. I'm sure a good portion of the kids will transfer. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a season not too dissimilar to this past Michigan season.

I don't know how Bill Belichick is going to deal with or like coaching college football. I don't know that he has coached in college before. I only remember him as an NFL head coach, and a quite successful one at that. Bill Belichick knows football. There's no denying that fact. He has won multiple Super Bowls. He has helped to guide stifling defenses. He knows how to use what he has in the best possible way. He knows when to cut the fat and he doesn't let feelings get involved. He knows this sport inside and out. But college is a whole other animal. I mean, recruiting is a year round thing. Bill Belichick is going to have to go into an 18 year olds living room and sell this kid on UNC football. That is tough for anyone.

Also, Belichick is 72 years old. I mean, I cannot imagine traveling all over the country trying to sell your program is fun for anyone. College football coaches are getting younger too. I had a conversation with my son recently about that very topic. Jim Harbaugh left because he wanted to coach in the NFL. He was also sick and tired of dealing with the NCAA and all their nonsense. Nick Saban left Alabama last year and made a statement along the lines of he disliked how much the college game had changed. When you look at most college coaches, they seem to be not much older than 50. University of Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz is 41. Florida coach Billy Napier is 44. Tennessee coach Josh Heupel is 46. Georgia coach Kirby Smart is 48. Ryan Day is 45. PJ Fleck is 44. Lincoln Riley is 41. Sherrone Moore is 39. Dan Lanning is 38. In the ACC Cal coach Justin Wilcox is 48. Dabo Swinney is 58. Manny Diaz is 50. Mario Cristobal is 54. And Fran Brown is 42. Bill Belichick is nearly 30 years older than some of these guys. Hell, he is getting close to being 40 years older than some of these guys. College football, as far as recruiting and dealing with the NIL, is becoming a young guys game.

I feel like Belichick, with all of his knowledge, is going to find that coaching college football is way tougher than he thinks. And, as I said above, he is coaching at UNC. UNC is a basketball school through and through. It always has been, probably always will be. They have had some seasons that are solid, but they haven't been a CFP contender yet. They have a ton of preseason hype usually, but that doesn't seem to translate on the field. Belichek is also very old school. He's going to assume that he is the man in charge and the leader. That may have been the case in the 80's and 90's, but not anymore. As it should be, player empowerment is a real and viable thing. These kids know their worth and they aren't shy about letting everyone know. Kids aren't going to go play for Bill Belichick just because he is Bill Belichick. They are going to want playing time and solid NIL deals. They are going to want tv coverage. They are going to want awards. The coach is just a dude now. They teach the game and help mold these kids into pros in some cases. But, the coach doesn't have the power that they used to. Again, not many people know more about football than Bill Belichick. He has a wealth of knowledge. Teaching the game to his players won't be the issue. I think he will find it much more difficult to recruit and have to be on 365 days a year.

Time will tell, but this is a weird move from him. We will see how it turns out.

2024 Year in Review: Best Podcasts

Today is the final day of my 2024 best of lists. I have my top five podcasts/podcast episodes of the year. I’m all in on podcasts. I enjoy making them and listening to them. They comfort me and make my workouts fly by. I still listen to music more, but podcasts are gaining ground fast.

At number 5 I have “How Did This Get Made” covering “The Happening”. I vividly remember seeing this movie in the theaters and being utterly confused. At the time the only person I could talk to about how insane this movie is was my wife. She saw it with me and we were both dumbfounded. So it was nice to hear Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas also talk about how nuts this movie was. It made me feel less insane. These people are in the industry, so I liked hearing their inside baseball talk on this incoherent movie. All three of them also happen to be hilarious, so hearing an intelligent and very funny conversation about a terrible movie made the listening experience that much better. I implore you, if you’ve been unfortunate enough to see “The Happening”, and you want to feel better about it, listen to this episode of “HDTGM”. You’ll feel way better.

At number 4 I have “Comedy Bang! Bang!” returning to hell house for their Halloween episode. It’s felt like years since they’ve done this. This used to be an episode I waited for every year, but they decided to take a break. But, coming back this year was well worth the wait. Aukerman was on point, as always, as the host. He led us all perfectly the whole time. Jimmy Pardo was an excellent guest to have for this one in particular. He’s the perfect foil. Jon Daly was good as always. Ben Rodgers is one of the funnier improvisers on the planet. But this was all leading to Nick Wiger singing his classic version of the “Monster Mash” as Leo Karpatze. His version is filthy and Wiger goes all in while singing the song. I enjoyed the long walk they took to get to the song because the payoff was tremendous. I hope “CBB” continues to do this every Halloween.

At number 3 I have “The Seth Myers and Lonely Island” podcast. This is the perfect “SNL” throwback show for me. I was all in on “SNL” when The Lonely Island was new and Seth Myers was one of the head writers. In this show they go back and talk about the digital shorts, which are some of the best things to ever come from “SNL”. Seth Myers convincing Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaefer was a triumph unlike any other. I love hearing the four of them go back and reminisce over some of the best stuff “SNL” has been a part of. I love hearing the process and how everything came together. It’s also pretty cool when they get their friends to leave voice notes about their time doing a digital short. I love this podcast and I cannot wait to hear more and more.

At number 2 I got to see “CBB” live on tour this year. It was awesome. “CBB”, by a wide margin, is my favorite podcast. It’s on this list twice. The live show was during the first part of the tour. I think it was the fourth or fifth show of the year. It was great, as I hoped. Aukerman did his thing as well as he always does. Paul F Tompkins was second to the stage and he played his Irish priest character that I adore. Lily Sullivan was next, my first time seeing her live, as her Australian counterpart. She’s even funnier live. She’s a damn good improviser. Connor Ratliff was a famous donkey from Missouri that I had never heard of. He was the highlight of the night for me. Carl Tart, one of the best, was the Pine Sol lady. This is a classic “CBB” character he created years ago, and it was rad to see him do it live. And Will Hines was last to the stage as a futuristic traveler which the whole panel gave a hard time. It was a great, jam packed show that nearly pushed two hours. I wanted even more. It was a fantastic live show.

At number 1 I have “Doughboys” doing their Munch Madness tournament centered around Taco Bell. Mike Mitchell and Nick Wiger are a perfect representation of opposites attract. Their back and forth makes this podcast one of the best out there. And to hear them talk about a place they love dearly, Taco Bell, made the month of March some of the best listening of the year. The fights were outrageous and hilarious. Getting their friends to come on and side with them made for great radio. The live finale was one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard on a podcast. The fight between Mitch and Wiger over the winner was incredible and it was blending into later episodes. These two, and their guests know so much about Taco Bell so I trusted their thoughts on the food. I don’t like Taco Bell myself, but it was fascinating to hear all these people who love it fight and argue and yell at one another about certain menu items. It was also downright hilarious. “Doughboys” always seems to say they have a bad podcast, but that’s not true, and especially not true when it comes to Munch Madness from this past year. It was a great collection of seven or eight episodes of my favorite listening in all of 2024.

2024 Year in Review: Top Sports Moments

Welcome to day four of my best of 2024 lists. Today is sports. This is probably my favorite one to write, especially when Michigan football is doing good things. It’s not all Michigan football, but my top two moments definitely revolve around them. Sports is a way of life for me, and I truly love watching, writing and talking about them. On to my list.

At number 5 I
have the Paris Olympics. The Olympics were fun this year. The basketball, more on that in a minute, was excellent as always. But, I found myself watching more and more of the games. I always say I’m not going to do that, but this year was different for me. I got really into badminton for a day. I was watching it for fun, but then I found myself rooting for certain teams. I was making wild claims about what the teams should be doing. I was all in. It was rad. I got into the skateboarding. I was enjoying a good portion of track and field. I extensively watched hoops. These Olympics were probably the most I’ve ever tuned in and really enjoyed the games. They were a blast.

At number 4, I have the men’s gold medal basketball game between France and team USA. This was one of the better basketball games I’ve seen in a long time. I almost put the Serbia-USA game here, but that didn’t have the stakes this game had. This was back and forth. This game was France announcing themselves as a true threat in 2028. This was Victor Webanyama letting the world know how good he truly can be. This was Garschon Yabusele letting everyone know he was NBA ready. This was LeBron James reminding the world his greatness. This was Devin Booker shoehorning his way into superstar conversations. But, this was all about Stephen Curry showing the world what makes him so great. He seemingly couldn’t miss. When he hit his fourth three in a row, my son and I both audibly gasped. We couldn’t believe what we were watching. It was amazing. It was also the last time, in my opinion, that we will see the USA as the basketball favorite in the Olympics. This game was amazing, and it was even better to watch in real time.

At number 3 I have the rise of Victor Webanyama. He was the presumed number 1 pick in his NBA draft, and he went number 1. His defense was supposed to be ahead of his offense, and it was, only for a bit. His offensive game got better and better as the year went on. He’s a 7’4 unicorn. He can play in the paint, but he’s also a legit three point shooter. His defense is incredible. His limbs are so long that he can get faked and still make a block or contest a shot. It’s amazing to see. He can dribble the ball up the court. He’s getting an edge that’s only going to make him better. He’s getting bigger. And he’s very young. The NBA is in a good spot for post LeBron games, because Victor Webanyama seems to be as advertised. I implore you to watch him play if you haven’t yet. There’s no one else like him in basketball.

Now for my Michigan football love.

At number 2 is my most recent 2024 event, a 6-5 Michigan team, as a 20 point underdog, going into Columbus and beating the second ranked university of Ohio State. This was so unexpected and so glorious. Michigan had a bad year. They looked over their heads and confused most of the season. I saw them live and it was just as bad in person. Outside of a few dudes from last year’s title team, this was an entire new team with limited reps as starters. The university of Ohio State, on the other hand was great. They were 10-1. They had the best roster money could buy. They dug deep into their NIL budget to make this team unbeatable. And they held onto to that, minus the Oregon game, which they still almost won. This was supposed to be a blowout. In 2019 Ryan Day said he was “going to hang 100” on Michigan, and I thought this may be the year it happens. But, much to my delight, Day and Chip Kelly decided they had to show how “tough” their team can be. They kept trying to run the ball up the middle, the strength of Michigan’s defense. It was bottled up all afternoon. When they would throw, they gashed Michigan's secondary. But, they had some score to fill, so they went away from that and back to running, which only helped Michigan stay in this game.  As the game progressed I couldn’t believe it was close. Late in the fourth quarter, tied at 10-10, I looked at my dad and said, “imagine if this Michigan team wins today”. Michigan QB Davis Warren proceeded to throw a terrible goal line interception after that. But the university of Ohio State decided to try and prove their toughness yet again and Michigan got the ball back with solid field position. They then kept getting first downs, only by running the ball, and marched down near the goal line again. They bled the clock down to 40 seconds and Dominic Zvada kicked a chip shot field goal for a 13-10 lead. Michigan kicked off, and four plays and one yard gained later, Michigan did it. They won this game. As improbable as it seemed that morning, they pulled off the victory. There was the melee with the flag at the end of the game, but even that didn’t deter my excitement. As frustrating as this season was, this team showed grit and determination and toughness and beat a much better team by playing hungrier, angrier and tougher. This season was a success due to this one win. It was glorious.

Nothing will top my number 1 sports moment of 2024, unless they do it again in my lifetime. That’s last year’s Michigan football team beating Alabama in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day and then winning the title a little over a week later. The 23-24 Michigan football team season was tremendous to watch. That defense was incredible. It may be one of the best defenses college football has ever seen. They had studs everywhere and they had great coaches teaching them the game. The offense was rough, rugged and nasty. They could also throw the ball around if the needed to. The O line was stout. JJ McCarthy was a good game manager who had the tools to improvise. Blake Corum is one of the greatest running backs Michigan has ever had. Colston Loveland and AJ Barner were a great tight end duo. And Roman Wilson was consistent and dependable and Cornelius Johnson was a great deep threat. This team was loaded and locked in all year. Even with the nonsensical sign stealing allegations, this team never stopped winning games and blowing opponents out. If an opposing coach called them out, they beat that team even worse. This team rode for each other and the coaches and it showed on and off the field. Their closest game was the university of Ohio State game, but the Rose Bowl versus Alabama was much more nerve wracking. They then went into National Title game and beat Washington, the only other undefeated team last season, and beat them by 21 points. This was a “team of destiny”. I didn’t fully appreciate them until after the title, but now I’m so grateful for everything the 23-24 Michigan team gave the fans. They won every game and won them all in style. They took on the villain role. They embraced and reveled in the hate. And as a fan it was wonderful to see. I always want Michigan to blow everyone out so I can relax during the games, and that’s what they did all the way to the title. I will always remember this and savor it. It is my proudest moment as a sports fan and that Michigan team will go down in history. Go Blue.

2024 Year in Review: Best Television Shows

Welcome to day three of my best of 2024 lists. Today I come to you with my top five tv shows of 2024. TV is in a good spot where we sit right now. There’s tons of content. Too much of you ask me. But, a good amount of tv shows out there are critically acclaimed and fun to watch. A few shows I watch but didn’t make my list are, the final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” and season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building”. I adore both these shows, but for varying reasons, they didn’t make my list. Oh also don’t watch a ton of the super critical darling shows. I’ve never seen “Succession”. I have zero interest in “Industry”. Those shows aren’t for me. But, I do have a top five for 2024, and I’m very much in on all five of these shows.

Coming in at number 5 I have “KAOS”. I read all the reviews, I saw that critics kind of panned the show, but I was still intrigued. I am a fan of shows that take mythological people and put them in real life situations. Those shows speak to me. And “KAOS” excelled in this for me. Jeff Goldblum is magnetic as Zeus. I couldn’t get enough of him. But it was everyone around him really doing a good job. The writers of this show took on these Greek characters and really made an interesting eight episode arc for all of them. I don’t usually binge stuff, but I finished this show in three days. An episode would end and I wanted more. I’m bummed it got cancelled. They could’ve taken this concept in many other direction. Go seek out this show. It’s very well made.

At number 4 I have season 3 of “The Bear”. “The Bear” continues to be one of the best written and best acted shows on all of tv. It’s endlessly rewatchable. I really enjoyed the whole arc of this season. Seeing them open the restaurant and all the stress that comes from that was great. This season was funnier than the first two. John Cena showing up had me cracking up. Ayo Edibiri is continuing to shine and getting more work, which is much deserved. Jeremy Allen White is rightfully award nominated again. I could say the same with Ebon Moss Bacharach. But Abby Elliot truly shined this season. She did some amazing work. I know some people were down on this season, I was not. I will continue to watch and I’m sure it will continue to be great.

At number 3 I have “Fallout”. I knew nothing of this show when it was first on Amazon. It wasn’t until RD told me to check it out that it popped on my radar. I also didn’t know until a few episodes in that it was based on a video game. None of that mattered when I started to watch. This show is really good. It’s bleak and depressing, but in the correct ways. It’s not very uplifting, but when it is, it hits. Ella Purnell is exceptional as the lead. Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul, who is now one of my all time favorite characters. Kyle McLachlan and Johnny Pemberton excel. Everyone is wonderful. I also like the world that the show has used from the game. It feels like a likely outcome if this happened to the world. And the finale has me super hyped for season 2. I’m glad RD told me about this show because I don’t think I would have watched otherwise. This show is awesome.

At number 2 I have “The Penguin”. This is another one that RD asked about and I started watching after his take. I trust RD’s recommendations. “The Penguin” is brutal. There’s no respite. There may be minor moments here and there that take a small break, but this show is bleak. Collin Ferrell is Oz. He is unrecognizable. His accent is spot on. He walks like an actual penguin. I’m very impressed with his performance here. Cristin Milioti is even better. She is ruthless, but I’m on her side. I get why she’s doing what she’s doing. And she is absolutely dynamic here. This show is a masterclass from these two actors. And if you have any issues with superhero or MCU/DCU fatigue, this is not a show that’s superhero focused. This is a gritty crime drama. It’s a mafia story, and a well done mafia story. It’s disturbing and upsetting, but it’s also damn good.

Finally, at number 1 I have the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. I mean, what else would I pick? “Curb” may be the greatest comedy tv show ever, and they went out on top. Larry David heard all the criticism for the “Seinfeld” finale, and he redid it and redid it better. This season was leading up to a finale that was going to end up with David in jail, and it did, but he did so much more with it on the way there. The hair dye episode is a classic. The fame that Maria Sofia has gained was tremendous. The Aunty Ray stuff made me smile. The episode with the guy from “District 9” and “Chappie” should be studied by do day writers looking to make cringe comedy. Anytime David interacted with Ted Danson or Susie, it was as funny as ever. “Curb” is an achievement in comedy writing and I’m going to sorely miss it. But this final season was perfect and will go down as one of the best final tv seasons of all time. It’s a gem.

2024 Year in Review: Best Music

Today I come to you with my top five albums/music moments from 2024. I love music, listening to it, seeing it live and chatting with friends about it. I am getting older, and some of the new, well loved artists have no bearing on me. I like what I like, I will try some recommendations, but I listen to the stuff that I have always listened to. That's the way it is. I will say, and this isn't part of my top five, I have grown to enjoy Taylor Swift's catalog, I like listening to Olivia Rodrigo and Chappel Roan makes me want to dance. I have to imagine this is due to having a nine year old daughter that is just now getting into music. I just wanted to put that out there. Now, onto the list.

At number 5 I have my first live experience of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I have heard so many people talk about this group. I have read a ton about this group. I have read about how prolific they are, putting out dozens of records in short periods of time. But I just figured they were a jam band thing that I had outgrown. I was very, very wrong. My buddy had an extra ticket when they were in Saint Louis and offered it to me. I wanted to see what the fuss was all about, so I happily accepted the ticket. It helps that my buddy is such a big fan, but what I saw unfold for the next two and a half hours was rad. They started off with some of their metal music. And from there on out I heard metal, rock, electronic, new wave and even songs that used a gong heavily. I was taken aback at how well, how proficient they played and sang. These dudes are true pros and seeing them live was exceptional. I immediately started listening to as much of their catalog as I could and am still listening to them today. King Gizzard is worth the hype and then some, and my fandom started this past summer when I saw them live.

At number 4 I have Kirk introducing me to Califone. I had no idea who or what this band was when Kirk texted me and asked if I wanted to go to a show of theirs. I told him I hadn't heard of them, but to let me listen and I'd get back to him. He agreed, but told me to answer quickly. I guess the show he was talking about was in a person's basement in town and they were only selling 50 tickets. I went to Spotify and turned the music on right away. I was hooked. Califone is folky with some experimental stuff. I love the lead singer's voice. I like how mellow the music sounds. I also like how loud it can get with only an acoustic guitar. After hearing one song I told Kirk I was in for the show. The show was even better than just listening in my car. I had never seen a show like this before. It was intimate and personal. Califone had two members performing and they were great. The banter in between songs was awesome. We were asked how everything sounded. It felt like we had a say, and that made the night even more fun. I'm still listening to Califone to this day and have even checked out some of the band members' side projects. Now to the albums.

At number 3 I have Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Wild God". This record is classic Nick Cave. Cave tells a story with his song lyrics. He paints a picture. I love his voice bringing these stories to life. The Bad Seeds are a perfect backing band for all the things Nick Cave wants to do. When an artist like him and his band comes out with a new record, and it hits as well as this one does, that makes me smile so much. It is nice and refreshing to someone of Cave's ability and longevity still making new, awesome music that reminds us all of what makes them so great.

At number 2 I have Kendrick Lamar's "GNX". I mean, Kendrick cannot miss at the moment. He is on a heater like we've never seen before. He crushed his rap beef this summer. His songs from said beef were played over and over again. His music videos were rad as well. Kendrick Lamar didn't have to do anything else and he would've owned the year in music. But, much to my delight, he gave us a full length record that is as good as most of his stuff. This album has no skippable tracks in my opinion. Kendrick Lamar has a lot to say and I love that he is recording it all for us to hear. I'm stoked that he will be touring this summer with SZA and that they are making a stop in STL. "GNX" has just about everything I enjoy from Kendrick Lamar and I cannot wait to hear these songs live.

And at number 1 for 2024 in music I have Tyler, the Creator's "Chromakopia". This record is damn near perfect. And I mean everything about it. The lead up had me, and everyone else for that matter, super hype. There were theories and posts online about all the early buzz and videos. Releasing a song like "Noid", with one of the best music videos in a long long time was perfect. That made everyone clamor for the record even more. Releasing it on a Monday as opposed to a Friday was genius. The free shows that Tyler, the Creator was doing made it all the more intriguing. By the time the record came out, I would've been happy with pretty much anything. Lucky for me and everyone else, the record is incredible. Tyler, the Creator keeps trying new things and it's working. He's showing us his growth as an artist. His music has gotten better and better. He knows how to produce and rap over perfect beats he's made for himself. His features are second to none. His shows are a blast and look incredible on screen. "Chromakopia" has wonderful relistening ability. This is just a perfect record for my fandom in music.

2024 Year in Review: Best Movies

This week I'll be doing my best of 2024 lists. I enjoy doing these and I like to do them right before the holidays. Just like years past, I'll do my top five movies, tv shows, music, sports moments and podcasts/podcast episodes. Let us tarry no longer. I'm going to start the week with my top five movies of the year. I have not seen every movie I intended to see in 2024. That means movies like "Anora" or "Y2K" are not on my list because I have yet to find the time to watch them. I also want to see many more movies that came out, but I forgot or the timing never really worked out for me. But, I think I paired my list down pretty well and the five movies I picked were the best, in my opinion, that I watched in 2024.

Coming in at number 5 I have "Self Reliance". This was a movie I watched by chance. I was listening to a podcast that Jake Johnson was on and he was promoting this movie. I like his work. He said that Anna Kendrick was involved, as was Andy Samberg, playing himself. Both of those added to my curiosity. It was streaming on hulu, and after the podcast episode I turned the movie on. I really enjoyed what I saw. "Self Reliance" is a movie where a guy has a chance to win a big sum of money if he can avoid being assasinated for a certain amount of time. All he has to do is constantly have someone by his side, and the people out to get him cannot go after him. Along the way there's twists and turns that make this movie even better. I found myself rooting for Johnson's character. I wanted to know more about why Anna Kendrick was so willing to help. I liked the whole Andy Samberg of it all. This was a cool, unique idea of a movie with a stellar cast. It was well written, only 90 minutes long and totally paid off. I think everyone should seek this movie out so more movies like this can be made in the future.

At number 4 I have "Deadpool and Wolverine". I have grown weary of timelines and superhero stuff, but this movie did it right. The right jokes were made. The right timeline was picked. It was a great vehicle for the superheroes involved. Ryan Reynolds understands Deadpool and knows how to write and play him onscreen. Hugh Jackman is Wolverine, and this version has been my absolute favorite to this point. To get X-23, Blade, Elektra and Gambit involved was perfect. I enjoyed Chris Evans in this movie. The villain was mean and nasty, but also understandable. I knew why she was doing what she was doing. It made sense to me. This movie is fun, vulgar, hyper violent and one of the bloodiest movies I've ever seen. It was also a blast to watch.

At number 3 I have "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga". RD and I debated about this movie to no end. I loved it, but said it wasn't as good as "Fury Road", which I personally think may be the best movie ever made. He consistently told me it was a totally different movie. I get that. Anyway, "Furiosa" is grimy and gritty in all the right ways. To see the world created that we all know from "Mad Max" was incredible. Chris Hemsworth played an excellent villain. Anya Taylor Joy was magnetic as Furiosa. I loved the origin story and getting to finally see why Furiosa was at Immortan Joe's camp. I found this movie enthralling and dynamic. George Miller made a colorful yet gritty movie work to perfection.

At number 2 I have "Dune:Part 2". Denis Villenuve knows how to make the seemingly unmakeable movie. He has adapted the "Dune" books into something that is not only watchable, but fantastic and easy to understand. Timothee Chalamet is wonderful as Paul Atriedes. Rebecca Ferguson has embodied his mom and preacher of what she considers the gospel. Zendaya is remarkable. She absolutely crushes her role. Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin bring mild comedic elements to this dreary world. The sandworms look real. The battle scenes are epic and beautifully shot. "Dune:Part 2" has one of the best shifts in tone and color when we see where the Harkonnens live and fight and plot. There are no notes for this movie. It is damn near perfect.

At number 1 I have "The Substance". I have not seen a movie this unique, this refreshing in years. There's no other movie out there right now, or in the past decade plus for that matter, that comes close to being what "The Substance" is. Demi Moore is simply amazing as Elisabeth Sparkle. She is perfect for the role of a superstar who other people think has aged out of her fame. Margaret Qualley is just as good as the younger version of Sparkle. She takes it all in stride and is more than game for what this movie is telling the audience. Collie Farageat had an idea and went for it, hitting an absolute homerun. This movie will make you queasy. It is meant to unnerve the viewer. There are some very disturbing images. But when you let it wash over you and you allow yourself to be in for the ride, you will end up thinking about this movie over and over and over again. I've already watched it three times, and I can't wait to watch it again. I want to see more and more of what I may have missed on my first three viewings. "The Substance" is a movie that needs to be seen and then talked about. It's so damn good.

"A Real Pain": Exploring Heritage, Humor, and Heartache

Sometimes the best movie-going experiences come from taking a chance. That’s exactly how my kids and I ended up watching Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain. Instead of picking the movie first, we started by choosing the Hi Pointe Theatre, a local gem with a classic charm that reminds me of simpler times. Known for its mix of older films and thoughtfully selected new releases, it’s always a pleasure to visit. Once we settled on the Hi Pointe, we scanned the listings and landed on A Real Pain. A quick read of the synopsis sparked our interest, and the movie’s connection to Polish heritage gave it even more appeal for us. As someone who is 1/4 Polish (making my kids at least 1/8), I was curious to see how the film would handle themes tied to family roots. 

The story follows cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) as they travel to Poland to honor their grandmother. What starts as a somewhat comical road trip evolves into a poignant exploration of family, identity, and the unresolved tensions that shape who we are. I found myself relating deeply to David, particularly his frustration with Benji. On the surface, Benji comes across as the “cool guy,” exuding charm and charisma. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that beneath his empathetic façade lie selfish motives and trauma-induced instability. This dynamic felt strikingly familiar, highlighting the challenges of navigating relationships with people who can be both magnetic and overwhelming. 

Kieran Culkin delivers a standout performance, capturing the raw vulnerability of Benji’s character. Watching his interactions with Eisenberg’s David was a rollercoaster—hilarious in one moment and emotionally intense the next. Their dynamic reminded me of the complexity of family relationships, where love and exasperation often go hand in hand. 

One of the film’s strengths is its ability to weave humor and heartfelt moments seamlessly. It had us laughing one minute and reflecting on family bonds the next. The Polish backdrop added another layer of depth for me. Seeing the characters confront their heritage and shared history made me think about my own roots and the connections that tie us to the past. 

The intimate, nostalgic setting of the Hi Pointe Theatre made the experience even more special. Watching a film with this kind of emotional weight in a theater steeped in history enhanced its impact. It reminded me of the simple joy of sitting down with my kids and getting lost in a story together. 

Final Thoughts: 

A Real Pain is a film that resonates on multiple levels. From its humor to its heartfelt exploration of family and heritage, it offers something meaningful for everyone.
