Best of 2019: Best of Everything Else

Super writer/critic extraordinaire Ty has already covered the best albums, the best movies, the best television shows, the best podcasts, and the best sports moments of 2019. Today I am going to give the rest of the stuff of 2019 some love. We will cover books, tech, video games, and a few other corners of society not given the top five/ten treatment by our publications. Let’s get started.

Best Video Game of 2019

Untitled Goose Game is the game we needed in our lives at this very moment in history. It appeals to young and old alike, and for very different reasons. I talked with a nine year old about the game, and then spun the game as an allegory for President Trump.

As for the game itself? You are a goose, and you are here to terrify a small village. You get from place to place by solving puzzles that involve your goose stealing things, scaring kids, and causing general mayhem.

It is awesome.

Best Movie Trailer for a Movie Released in 2019

This should have been the first trailer for Joker, but then Cats came along. A movie trailer needs to be memorable, and oh boy was the Cats trailer memorable for all the wrong reasons. The movie looked horrifying and stupid at the same time. I spent most of my time watching and rewatching the trailer asking myslef why would such an such actor be in this thing. My answers never came. Cats shows us that the best of us need to be told every now and then. The trailer was our first warning.

Best Movie trailer for a Movie Released after 2019

In 2019, the DC movie Universe started to catch up with Marvel. Aquaman came out in late 2018, but was the top movie in the early months of 2019. Shazam was a modest hit, and well like by the critics and the audience. Joker was a megahit and the most talked about movie of the year. Then around Thanksgiving we were given our first look at Wonder Woman 1984. The setting was spot on, the music was incredible, and the movie itself looks amazing. June 5th, 2020 cannot get here soon enough.

Best Book of 2019

Great new books come out every year. What is truly the best is usually left up to a person’s personal preference. Many times the best book we read in a given year came out in a previous year. The best book for 2019, or the most important to read book, is George Orwell’s 1948 novel 1984.

In 1948, George Orwell understood the dangers of screaming fake news and blind loyalty to a government that has an agenda counter to the benefit of the people they serve. In 2019 we live in 1984’s world, and we do not care. It could never happen to us is what we said when we first read Orwell’s dystopic story. In 2019 we need to read 1984 to acknowledge the fact we live in this society.

Best Tech of 2019

It is hard to judge new technology until we have seen it in action for a year or more. All the big tech sites with praise anything Apple, and then quietly say how bad the tech was years later, see the Apple Pencil and Macbook keyboard.

Apple is not alone in the blind praises bestowed by the tech media on the companies and personalities the writers so desperately want to have access to. That is why the Tesla Cybertruck is the best tech of the year.

The cybertruck look stupid, it will be grotesquely overpriced, and it will be bested by a real car company in the not so distant future, but the Cybertruck will be considered the first heavy duty pickup to normalize the idea of an all electric truck for the masses. In the not so distant future when Tesla is gone, the tech media will continue to remind us that the Cybertruck was “first”. They will not be totally wrong.

Best Written Thing on the Internet

In 2019 the website Deadspin.com entered a death spiral. The owners decided to lay down the law on the creators, and the creators revolted. The end of one of the most important internet sites had dawned. Before the true endgame, former editor Megan Greenwell wrote an insightful and scathing piece about the current state of internet journalism. We live in a world where traditional journalism, i.e. newspapers, radio, and televsion, has been sacrificed on the alter of capitalism. The internet was where real journalism was still breathing it’s survival breaths. Then the corporate raiders came for the internet. Clicks, likes, and trash were valued more than the talents of creators. Megan Greenwell saw this, was fired, and then left the last parting shot. Forget about all the “traditional” media think pieces on the world around us. Megan Greenwell gave us a true look into the future we are moving towards. Read her words and be wary.

Best Visual Thing on the Internet

The Peloton is stupid. Exercise is good, but the cult like, false view of wealth, that the Peloton sells is poisonous. The company/cult’s newest ad reflects the toxic image the overpriced spin bike is selling.

Enter a hero. Ryan Reynold’s owns a gin called Aviator and he sought out the woman in the Peloton ad. Together they made the greatest ad of the year. Who knew that gin was more progressive, and respectful, than an exercise device. Now we know.

These are just a few of the things I saw in 2019 that made an impact. While companies like Peloton and any trust fund idiot that owns a website tried to push society backwards, we had heroes like Megan Greenwell, Ryan Reynolds, and an untitled goose to give us the catharsis we need. In 2019 we were also gifted with the reminder of what was warned in 1948, and we were able to observe pop culture’s hubris with Cats. All in all there were scares and hope in the year 2019 of the common era.

Bring on the 20’s.

Happy May Day, Best Known as the Birth of SeedSing

And so it began.

May 1st will always be a special day around our virtual offices, because May 1st represents the launch of SeedSing. I wanted to use the internationally recognized Workers Holiday as the marking point for what we are trying to accomplish here at the website. Festivals dating back to the Roman Republic era have also used the 1st day of this fifth glorious month to celebrate the rebirth of spring. SeedSing exists to give voice to those who may not have a place at society’s table, and we exist to celebrate the blossoming of new ideas. We are happy to celebrate this May Day with you, and we want to celebrate where we have been and where we are going.

So what is the purpose of SeedSing? We live in a world where ideas are being monopolized by the wealthy and connected elite. Ideas are not commodities, they are the only thing we collectively share. Here at SeedSing we want to let the people take back their rights to having thoughts. We want to give you a voice. The global community is in trouble. The people at the top of the global economic system are only concerned with self-preservation, and they have used the media and government to solidify their power. SeedSing is the people's fortress where we can speak freely, and start to fix the world being destroyed by the top 1%. That is the purpose of SeedSing.

Having spent the last few years working on SeedSing, I have evolved quite a bit. What began as a way for local candidates to easily reach their voters has turned into a blog and podcast focusing on politics and pop culture. That makes Seedsing one of the billion plus blogs out there talking about these topics, but I feel like we have something more to offer. Most websites and podcasts disappear in less than one year. SeedSing continues because of the raw and unfiltered ideas that come from people who felt like their opinions were being ignored. The writers of SeedSing have taken on some of the biggest issues facing society. We correctly predicted that the Apple HomePod was an idiotic idea. The important discussion about what is a better burger, Whataburger, In N Out, or Shake Shack was vigorously debated. On more serious matters, we came to terms with a hero of ours being another pervy creep, and emotionally discussed the horror of terrorism in our country. SeedSing would not exist without these important ideas, and I cannot thank all the writers enough for everything they have contributed to this project. The guest contributors, some known and some unknown, have also been an incredibly valuable addition to the conversation we are having. With three years of growth behind us, we are excited to keep the ball rolling.

Fixing the world through our ideas does not have to be done in dark room with gloomy music playing in the background. The joy of our culture and entertainment is where our voices can be strongest. The writing here at SeedSing concerning pop culture, led by the awesomeness of Ty, has been our most popular content, because it is fun and unique. A semi-serious, half joking, look at the insanity around a children's television show has become far and away our most read, and talked about article. We do not discuss the same old baby boomer culture that seems to always overshadow whatever new and exciting thing is happening. This is where SeedSing is leading the way to reclaim pop culture from the constant coverage of fifty plus year old standards. Add your voice and let our culture flourish, not decay under the old ways.

The X Millennial Man Podcast has been our most successful avenue where our seeds have been allowed to sing. We welcomed in Ty's young son to teach us what the best toys are. The answers to who are the best video game characters and what are the best television shows of the 21st century were answered on the podcast. We also kept up the politics part of our mission by discussing what one year of the Trump Presidency has done to our psyche. These are the stories we do not hear in the regular media. Podcasting has been the common persons greatest weapon against a professional media who exists to solidify the status quo. SeedSing and the X Millennial Man will continue to be the voice of people, whatever they have to say.

Where do we go in our fourth year?  We continue our forward momentum. SeedSing is growing, but we need your help. This is a project funded by the money and efforts of a very small group of people. Your help is always appreciated. How can you help? We want your voice. Tell us your thoughts. If you want to write, we want to publish your ideas. If you have an idea, but are not comfortable with writing, tell us your thoughts and one of our regular contributors will put together a piece. We will get better at responding to people this year, because we need your voice. If you are not a writer, but still want to support SeedSing,  financial support is always a nice thing. Other ways to help us out is to follow SeedSing on twitter, @seedsingrdk, and to like us on Facebook. We are thrilled to think about the years ahead of us, and we are even more excited about your continued support of SeedSing.

Happy May Day, International Workers Day, and happy birthday SeedSing. Come on in and join us. Allow your seed to sing and take root. You only have your ideas to set free.

Defending the "Star Wars" Prequels Doesn't Mean You are a Nerd. It Means You have Bad Taste in Movies

If we could only throw the prequels into lava and rebuild them to be more badass

Recently I have heard from some friends, and comedians, that they did not like "The Force Awakens". I thought, that's weird because they like most of the other "Star Wars" movies, and I personally thought that "The Force Awakens" was incredible. When I asked my friends, or heard the random comedians on their podcast explain why they disliked the movie, I thought that their points were rather weak. They claimed that JJ Abrams ruined what the original trilogy did, they said that it was too similar to the original trilogy, some did not like the new characters and so on and so forth. I disagree.

First off, JJ Abrams revived "Star Wars" after the disastrous prequels. That is a fact with no alternative version.

Second, with all the "remakes" or "updated versions" or "prequels" being made now, I applaud the fact that "The Force Awakens" hearkened back to the greatness that was "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". Those were great movies, as is "The Force Awakens". Again, there is no alternative telling of this fact.

Third, all the new characters are great. Finn, Rey, Poe, BB-8, Kylo Ren, all of them are perfect for the "Star Wars" universe. Anyone's alternative view of this fact is just plain lying.

What this all leads me too, I think the whole "nerd culture", that has become not only acceptable, but extremely popular, has made these people that were once picked on, but are now revered and looked upon as a popular group of people, resent the fact that they are not unique anymore. So, to combat this newfound popularity, they have tried to find ways to try and return to being a "nerd", when "nerd" was uncool.

Now, I am not popular by any means, but I do not consider myself a "nerd" either. Also, I do not care if you identify as a "nerd", but the people that are condemning "The Force Awakens" and now saying that the prequels are better, stop it with that nonsense. The prequels are an unmitigated disaster. Those movies are absolute garbage, and anyone with functioning eyes, ears and taste can accept how bad those movies are. The narratives in all three are stupid. The action scenes, which may be the only good thing in those movies, are trite and pointless. When Anakin falls into that lava pit and becomes Darth Vader, I could not roll my eyes enough at how stupid that scene was. The new characters in the prequels, save for Jango Fett, are terrible. The prequels gave us quite possibly the most racist character in movie history since the crows in "Song of the South", in Jar Jar Binks. That was such a slap in the face of whatever the hell race and culture that George Lucas and company were trying to emulate. I know that Anakin became Darth, but he was a new character, and all he did was whine and complain. He was a brat. Padme, who could have been as badass as Princess Leia was instead, a "damsel in distress". It was disrespectful. Watto was just stupid and clearly a "lets see how far we can take CGI" excuse for a character. The only cool new character was Mace Windu, which they barely used and then killed in the third prequel. The prequels are trash.

This leads me to the main point today. The people that are condemning "The Force Awakens", and defending the prequels are contradicting themselves, and just trying to regain their "nerd" status. As I have said, if you talk to anyone that does not care about their status, or how "nerdy" they can truly be, they will tell you all the same stuff I have just written, and then some. I am no "Star Wars" expert, but I do know what a good and a bad movie looks like, and "The Force Awakens" is good, and the prequels, they are a flaming pile of trash. There is plenty of other stuff that the people that want to act like "nerd" culture isn't cool anymore can glomb onto. They do not need to bash "The Force Awakens" and defend the prequels.

To help the nerds so desperate to be different, I have some things for you to consider. How about comic books? Who really reads those anymore? That could make you feel "nerdy" again, if that is what you want so badly. Or, you can memorize who is on your favorite college football team. I can name every player on Michigan's football team, their coaches and their AD. Doesn't that sound super "nerdy"? I also know as much as there is to know about the mid 90's NBA. I know this stuff is sports, but I have put in as much effort and time as "Star Wars" "nerds" have put into knowing these minute, stupid, non essential things. Doesn't that make me just as much a "nerd" as die hard "Star Wars" fans.

What it all really boils down to, you can still like "The Force Awakens" and be a "nerd". So what if the movie is widely acclaimed and loved. So were the 3 original "Star Wars" movies. You do not need to defend the prequels. I do not think defending the prequels makes you more of a "nerd", it just shows me that you have shitty choice in movies and I need to stay away from you whenever you suggest a movie you'd think I'd like. I'm sure "Star Wars" fans will come at me, but the prequels are truly awful, and there is no argument to be had otherwise. Just accept that "nerd" culture is now cool, and no matter how far away you try to get from being a "nerd", you are now the popular kids that a lot of other kids want to be like. This is a good thing. But, defending the prequels is a bad and stupid thing. Those movies are dreadful and thank goodness for "The Force Awakens". It is a great movie, and you don't have to be a "nerd" to like it.

Ty Wants to Applaud the Incredibly Awesome Meryl Streep

Cheers to you , Ms Streep

Almost a year ago, I wrote on this website how fed up I was with Meryl Streep movies. I thought that they did not get the same criticism and same harsh reviews that some similar movies did, and do. This was just coming off seeing "Ricki and the Flash", which I still think is pretty bad.

Today I need to unequivocally apologize and say that, not only do I think that Meryl Streep is NOT overrated, I know that she is one of America's greatest actors of all time. Her movies just aren't for me. Look, I'm not stupid. I can watch her in a movie and realize how great of a talent she truly is. She is the greatest actress of all time. I have no doubt in my mind about this. After seeing "Ricki and the Flash", I was just in the moment, and I wrote what I felt at the time. Had I slept on it, I probably never would have written that piece. But, that is how it goes.

Take "Ricki and the Flash" out, I can watch movies like "Death Becomes Her", "Julie and Julia", "Doubt", "The Devil Wears Prada", "Angels in America", "Adaptation" or "Marvin's Room", all of which I have seen, and realize she is the best actor on the screen. She has been in those movies with super duper stars like Goldie Hawn, Amy Adams(twice), Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Anne Hathaway, Jeffrey Wright, Nic Cage and Leonardo DiCaprio, and she is the best actor on screen by a wide margin. She is well deserving of all the accolades that she gets. She has earned it. She has been pretty incredible in everything she has done, so I get it now. She is above criticism. She is that level of star.

Same thing can be said for some of her former co stars. DiCaprio has been in some crappy movies too, but he never gets the bad exposure. Amy Adams is the new big thing, and for the most part, she is pretty good in everything she has been in lately, regardless if the movie is good or bad. George Clooney is another guy like that. He is so far removed from criticism, he can be in a movie like "Tomorrowland", and while it was critically panned, Clooney was never panned. It all makes sense now.

It is the same with star athletes. Michael Jordan's Wizards years are looked at as successful, but truth be told, he looked old and tired. Serena Williams may be the greatest tennis player of all time, but she recently had a poor performance and people just shrugged it off, as they should. It was a blip on her tremendous career. Nick Saban just got beat in the title game, but I do not think people will suddenly say he is overrated.

This all leads me to my 2 main points for today. First off, I was wrong, and I have learned to sleep on things before jumping to conclusions. Sure, I did not like "Ricki and the Flash", but that does not mean that Meryl Streep is "overrated". As I have said, she is probably our greatest living actor, and I do not think it is even close. I'm sorry for writing that Meryl Streep, and I take back all the negative things I said back then. You are a treasure, and I cannot wait to see what you do next.

Second, when accepting her Cecil B Demille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes the other night, she gave one of the best speeches that actually gives me hope we will get through the next 4 years of this abomination of a government that we now have. I know I said I was done with politics, and I am, but I have to talk about this incredible speech that Streep gave.

I do not watch the Golden Globes. I do not watch any awards shows. I find them boring and useless. This goes for everything involving awards, be it movies, music, TV or sports. I cannot stand awards shows. So, I saw Streep's speech the next day on social media, and I was moved. She came right out and called out that monster that only 46 percent of the country voted for. Some people called her out with claims that she "lives in a glass house" and she doesn't know what the working class really thinks. I say to those people, shut your god damn mouth. She was speaking for the people that voted for Hilary. We all feel the same way as Streep. She was right. For that pig to mock the disabled, then lie about not doing it, then go on Twitter to rant about Streep, I mean, he is a train wreck, and Streep was just pointing this out.

I know that some people, Trevor Noah being one, and I really like Trevor Noah, said she didn't have to do this, but I disagree. People like me, my wife, 99 percent of my friends and my family, we do not have a platform to the whole world to call this monster out. Streep had that platform, and she not only used it brilliantly, she used in perfectly. Everyone was talking about it the night of, and are still talking about it today. I have loved the people on social media coming to her aid as well, not that she needs help, Streep can more than stand up for herself.

When idiots like Meghan McCain, who was born and raised with a silver spoon in her mouth, and knows nothing about the glass ceiling, comes out and says that Streep's speech is one of the reasons that Voldemort got elected, I loved seeing the response she got from famous people like Billy Eichner. He roasted her on Twitter, and it was glorious. I highly recommend going to read that thread. It is awesome. I already loved Billy Eichner, and now I respect and love him even more. I hope his defense of Streep gets her attention and she agrees to be on "Billy on the Street", which would be his dream come true.

I applaud Meryl Streep for using her platform to speak her mind. We live in a country that was built on free speech, and she used it the absolute correct way. This also shows these dipshits politicians that the "left" or "democrats" or "liberals", whatever you want to call us, are not going to be silent during this atrocious administration. As I have stated, I am going to fight the fight as quietly, but as hard as I can as long as this injustice goes on, and I'm more than thrilled that I, and at least 54 percent of the country, AKA the majority, have the wonderful Meryl Streep on our side. I love you Meryl Streep.

I am so sorry about my previous article, and I offer you my humblest apologies. You are a national treasure, and just like I'm ready to go to war with Run the Jewels, I am also ready to fight the good fight with you. Thank you for all you do, and all you will continue to do. You are one of a kind Meryl Streep. Thank you.

Kyle Korver to the Cavs is OK. Not Great, Just OK

The scales of NBA power have not tipped that much

Now that the Kyle Korver to Cleveland trade is official, I have a few takes.

First off, this has to mean that the Hawks are about to have a fire sale. Korver was in the final year of his contract, and I suppose the front office figured they'd better get something for him before he leaves in free agency. Paul Milsap looks like he's the next one to go. Milsap is an awesome basketball player, and I'm sure he wants to play on a contender and, he is 32, which is old for a "superstar" in the NBA today. Milsap is going to get paid by someone this offseason, and just like with Korver, I think Atlanta wants to get something for him before he walks. I have heard many, many people say that Milsap being traded is basically a done deal. The 2 teams that come up most are Toronto and Boston. I think either spot would be a great destination for him, and I think it would push both of those teams to the second seed in the East.

Tim Hardaway Jr is another player who's name has started to pop up as a possible trade asset. He won't yield much of a return, but he hasn't really put it together in the NBA like many thought, and he too is in the final year of a contract, so get something while you can. At best, I think the Hawks could get a second rounder for him.

A lot of people have brought up a possible Dwight Howard trade. I think this would be insane, but that is what Dwight Howard brings with him everywhere he goes. I do not think he will be traded, but with all the possible moves, and the Korver move being official, I'm not sure Howard will want to stay on a team that is not going to get far in the playoffs, or even make the playoffs. He is nearing the end of his career, and I think he'd rather be on a contender, than a team going nowhere, even if it's his hometown.

With all this being said, I think the Hawks are going into a youth movement. I do not think they are tanking, where we sit right now, they are 20-16, so it is too late to tank. I also think the young guys could be decent. After Korver being traded, and the inevitable Milsap trade coming, I do not think they will make the playoffs this year, but they have some good young guys on their roster. I love Dennis Schroder. He may be inconsistent, but he is talented and has great confidence in himself. I think Kent Bazemore is a good role player. Mike Scott is a tough defender and a decent three point shooter. Their 2 rookies, Tauren Prince and DeAndre Bembry, have a ton of upside. So, I think, in a year or two, they could be a middling Eastern Conference team, and definitely a playoff team. The Hawks are going to unload their big name players, but I do not think it is as bleak as some have predicted after the Korver trade.

This leads me to my Cavs takes. A lot of people really like this trade. I do not think it changes much at all. This is still the Warriors title to lose. Sure, they blew a lead to Memphis recently and that the Cavs beat them on Christmas day, but the Warriors are still the best team in the NBA. Yes, the Cavs beat the Warriors, as I said, but the Warriors dominated that game almost the whole way. And, it was a midseason game, on the road. Who really cares, or even remembers who won these games. I have no clue who won any Christmas day game in 2015, and I am a humongous NBA fan. What I took away from that Cavs game, and I am getting back to the Korver deal, I promise, was that the Cavs tried really, really hard, and only KD and Draymond gave full effort for the Warriors. I feel like Klay and Steph took that game off. They let KD shoot as much as he wanted. They are still trying to figure things out with this impressive starting 5, and Christmas day was another "practice" of sorts for them. But, the Cavs really put forth full effort. LeBron, Kyrie and Kevin Love went at them hard. The rest of the Cavs were giving it their all, as they should. And, they still needed a miracle win on a crazy lucky shot from Irving.

What I gleaned most from that game was that the Cavs needed even more space. Korver brings them this. He is a great 3 point shooter, but the Cavs already have a younger, and a much, much better defender version of Kyle Korver in JR Smith. Smith is ten thousand times better than Korver. This is no disrespect to Korver, but he is old, his shooting is not what it once was, he plays no defense and JR Smith blends with this squad so much better. I'm sure they will play him off the bench, but who will he play with? Will it be him, LeBron, Kyrie, Love and Smith? Then they have no rebounding with Tristan Thompson on the bench. Put Thompson in for say Kevin Love, they do not have as much floor spacing as they would like. Put Thompson in and take out Smith, you have the liability of Korver playing defense. I see a lot of holes in what many seem to think is a "homerun" trade.

Give me the Warriors no matter what. The Warriors are still the much better team, in my opinion. The Cavs will roll through the East, unless Milsap gets dealt to Toronto, and I still think the Cavs would win, but when they get to the finals, they will have to face a much, much better and younger Warriors team. So, while some seem to think this trade makes the Cavs the new favorite to repeat, I do not see it that way. I just see an aging 3 point shooter, that thinks defense is optional, being added to a team that has the look of being afraid of what the Warriors may do to them when they inevitably meet for a third time this June. This is what I think of the newest member of the Cavs.
