Rice is My New Go To Side Dish

Yesterday on a run I was listening to "Doughboys". Every Tuesday they put out their Patreon episodes, and since I have access to them, it is a nice treat. They did one of their feed bags, in which they answer questions submitted by fans and listeners. I typically enjoy these episodes because they are free and loose and fun. It is a delightful hour plus. There are times where a question sits with me and I think about it, and that happened this week.

The question was from a fan overseas and they said that, instead of getting fries, they usually get rice as a side dish with their meal. They mentioned getting rice with chicken nuggets or a hamburger. This divulged into a question between the hosts and engineer on whether they prefer rice or a potato as a side dish. As I was running it seemed like a simple answer. I immediately thought that I would want a potato side dish. But the more they talked, the more I kind of flipped sides, then flipped back, then flipped again. I actually think this is a very good question, and I want to take a deepish dive into why I would now choose rice over a potato. And for those questioning my pick of rice over a potato, since steak is my favorite food, they said that this question only involves fast food places, no sit down/fancy spots, and fries are not included in the potato category. Those are totally out of the question.

So as I have sat with this for a couple days, the easiest answer for rice is how much easier it is to eat. Potato side dishes can be messy. They can be sloppy. They can also be super heavy and throw off the rest of the meal. Rice is much easier to eat, especially with a spoon. It is better for you. Both rice and potatoes are full of carbs, but rice is known as a "slow carb". I eat those regularly now. It is not sloppy unless you make it sloppy. My kids can make a mess of rice, but they are nine and five. An adult should have no problem eating rice clean. And rice is not nearly as heavy as a potato. It can be filling if you eat way too much, but you have to eat a ton of rice for it to fill you up. I also started to imagine both side options with some fast food spots that I really enjoy. The listener mentioned rice with chicken nuggets, and that sounds like a delight. Take some of that sweet and sour sauce and mix it in the rice with the nuggets and you could have a very low rent version of orange chicken. If I get nuggets and a baked potato, or a twice baked potato, or even a scalloped potato, that is too much. It is too heavy. I thought about burgers, mainly the double cheeseburger from Burger King, which is my favorite, and rice sounds so much better. The double cheeseburger is filling enough, so throwing a potato on top of that is far too much food. But if I were to get a side of sticky rice, that seems much more palatable. It seems much better for my insides as well. With the bun, and then add a potato on top of that, that is way too many carbs. The side of rice would be less, and better carbs. I love Popeye's spicy chicken sandwich, and a side of rice would be the perfect cooling down compliment to the heat. A potato wouldn't do much, but the rice would be excellent for quelling the spice. And as far as any chicken dish goes from fast food spots, rice is a much, much better side dish than any potato dish, save for french fries. Even when I thought about sandwich spots, like a Jersey Mike's or Jimmy John's, rice would be way better. I know chips are the sandwich side dish go to, but I think rice would be better, You could have less, it would be much better for you and no one ever needs that high, high amount of carbs. I always thought I was a potato guy. As mentioned before I love a good twice baked potato or a scalloped potato or some kind of potato hot dish. But those always made me feel too full before getting the main dish. I would over eat the potato dish. Rice seems like the better option. It is easier and better for me. I think I am now a rice fan and I like it.

Long story short, rice is a superior side dish to the potato for fast food restaurants. I would love it if America gave us this option. So the next time you just blindly pick a potato as a side dish, think about how much better of a choice rice would be. You won't regret it.

Happy May Day, Best Known as the Birth of SeedSing

And so it began.

May 1st will always be a special day around our virtual offices, because May 1st represents the launch of SeedSing. I wanted to use the internationally recognized Workers Holiday as the marking point for what we are trying to accomplish here at the website. Festivals dating back to the Roman Republic era have also used the 1st day of this fifth glorious month to celebrate the rebirth of spring. SeedSing exists to give voice to those who may not have a place at society’s table, and we exist to celebrate the blossoming of new ideas. We are happy to celebrate this May Day with you, and we want to celebrate where we have been and where we are going.

So what is the purpose of SeedSing? We live in a world where ideas are being monopolized by the wealthy and connected elite. Ideas are not commodities, they are the only thing we collectively share. Here at SeedSing we want to let the people take back their rights to having thoughts. We want to give you a voice. The global community is in trouble. The people at the top of the global economic system are only concerned with self-preservation, and they have used the media and government to solidify their power. SeedSing is the people's fortress where we can speak freely, and start to fix the world being destroyed by the top 1%. That is the purpose of SeedSing.

Having spent the last few years working on SeedSing, I have evolved quite a bit. What began as a way for local candidates to easily reach their voters has turned into a blog and podcast focusing on politics and pop culture. That makes Seedsing one of the billion plus blogs out there talking about these topics, but I feel like we have something more to offer. Most websites and podcasts disappear in less than one year. SeedSing continues because of the raw and unfiltered ideas that come from people who felt like their opinions were being ignored. The writers of SeedSing have taken on some of the biggest issues facing society. We correctly predicted that the Apple HomePod was an idiotic idea. The important discussion about what is a better burger, Whataburger, In N Out, or Shake Shack was vigorously debated. On more serious matters, we came to terms with a hero of ours being another pervy creep, and emotionally discussed the horror of terrorism in our country. SeedSing would not exist without these important ideas, and I cannot thank all the writers enough for everything they have contributed to this project. The guest contributors, some known and some unknown, have also been an incredibly valuable addition to the conversation we are having. With three years of growth behind us, we are excited to keep the ball rolling.

Fixing the world through our ideas does not have to be done in dark room with gloomy music playing in the background. The joy of our culture and entertainment is where our voices can be strongest. The writing here at SeedSing concerning pop culture, led by the awesomeness of Ty, has been our most popular content, because it is fun and unique. A semi-serious, half joking, look at the insanity around a children's television show has become far and away our most read, and talked about article. We do not discuss the same old baby boomer culture that seems to always overshadow whatever new and exciting thing is happening. This is where SeedSing is leading the way to reclaim pop culture from the constant coverage of fifty plus year old standards. Add your voice and let our culture flourish, not decay under the old ways.

The X Millennial Man Podcast has been our most successful avenue where our seeds have been allowed to sing. We welcomed in Ty's young son to teach us what the best toys are. The answers to who are the best video game characters and what are the best television shows of the 21st century were answered on the podcast. We also kept up the politics part of our mission by discussing what one year of the Trump Presidency has done to our psyche. These are the stories we do not hear in the regular media. Podcasting has been the common persons greatest weapon against a professional media who exists to solidify the status quo. SeedSing and the X Millennial Man will continue to be the voice of people, whatever they have to say.

Where do we go in our fourth year?  We continue our forward momentum. SeedSing is growing, but we need your help. This is a project funded by the money and efforts of a very small group of people. Your help is always appreciated. How can you help? We want your voice. Tell us your thoughts. If you want to write, we want to publish your ideas. If you have an idea, but are not comfortable with writing, tell us your thoughts and one of our regular contributors will put together a piece. We will get better at responding to people this year, because we need your voice. If you are not a writer, but still want to support SeedSing,  financial support is always a nice thing. Other ways to help us out is to follow SeedSing on twitter, @seedsingrdk, and to like us on Facebook. We are thrilled to think about the years ahead of us, and we are even more excited about your continued support of SeedSing.

Happy May Day, International Workers Day, and happy birthday SeedSing. Come on in and join us. Allow your seed to sing and take root. You only have your ideas to set free.

Cloves and Fedoras: Ty thinks you should give "I was there Too" a listen

Cloves and Fedoras is Seed Sings reviews for little known pieces of pop culture.  Feel free to contact us with your own submissions of undiscovered gems that must be known.

As with most people my age (let's say millennial) podcast are huge. They have a podcast for everything. From sports to comedy to food to politics and so on. It's all covered. I'm here to tell you about my new favorite podcast,  "I Was There Too". It's part of Earwolf's new sister network Wolfpop. Every two weeks Matt Gourley, who has been featured on other podcasts such as "James Bonding" and "SuperEgo". Matt interviews actors and actresses that have played semi small to bit part roles in classic movies. He's done 14 episodes so far and his guests have included, Paul F Tompkins from "There Will Be Blood", Ricco Ross from "Aliens", Greg Proops from "Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace", Peter Berkrot from "Caddyshack", Doug Benson from "Captain EO", the passengers from the bus in "Speed", Johnny Williams from "Goodfellas", Paul Rust from "Inglorious Basterds", Eileen Dietz from "The Exorcist", Jenette Goldstein from "Aliens", "T2", and "Titanic", DC Pierson from "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", Stephen Toblowsky from "Groundhog Day", and most recently, Diane Franklin from "Better Off Dead". All the episodes are great, even better for people who are fans of the movies. A couple of my favorites are, Doug Benson, Paul Rust and Peter Berkrot. Listening to Doug Benson talk about how odd Michael Jackson was on set to his(Doug Benson) exploits as a dancer in the movie are pretty funny. Paul Rust, who plays one of the grunts, talking about how cool and calm both Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino were give me even more respect for the two of them. And then there's Peter Berkrot AKA the kid who had the rake pushed against his neck by Bill Murray's Carl Spackler while telling him about caddying for the Dalai Lama, is excellent. According to him, most of Bill Murray's speech was improvised. That's incredible! But, my favorite episode so far is last weeks with Diane Franklin from "Better Off Dead". I'm a HUGE fan of that movie. My brother showed it to me when I was in my early twenties and I still quote it to this day. The movie holds up very well too. For those of you who don't know who Diane Franklin is she played the French foreign exchange student, Monique Junot Diane's character becomes John Cusack's love interest in the movie. Her stories range from her close friendship with John Cusack to, the fact that the director Savage Steve Holland wanted her character to not only have a French accent, but a lisp as well. Thankfully they got rid of the lisp before filming. It's a great episode of a wonderful podcast. Each episode is about an hour long which is a perfect amount of time in the podcast world. Their only 14 episodes in and it's bi weekly, so there's plenty of time for everyone to catch up. Give it a listen to, especially if you're a big time movie buff and enjoy.
