Surfing That Beautiful Blue Wave

Today I am going to talk about the midterm election results from last night. I'm going to keep this short and sweet, RD is the political expert on the site, but I have some feelings I'd like to get off my chest.

As you all know I am a liberal and a democrat. I always have been. Since the day I could vote I registered as a democrat, but I have always felt democratic, even before I could vote. I want everyone to be treated equally, I believe America is a melting pot and I am still hoping for universal healthcare in the future. That may sound unbelievable to some, but that is the way I feel. So, needless to say, the past few elections have not been great. At least in 2020 we got Biden, but even those midterms weren't great. But 2016, and 2024 were pretty awful. And we are now living in the aftermath of all of that awfulness. Yesterday people finally used their voices and brought power back to the people.

The Democrats now have a majority of the house and the senate. I was cautiously optimistic going into the results last night, but what proceeded to happen made me feel hope and joy for the first time in a long time involving politics. The people spoke up, with their votes, and told all the billionaires and fascists currently inside the government that we weren't going to stand for it anymore. Not only did the Democrats win control of the house and senate they won by a landslide. This was what sports fans like myself would consider a blowout. This was a landslide victory for the good guys. All these tech billionaires and racist assholes in the government right now have to be reeling, and that makes me so very happy.

And it happened in so many unexpected areas last night. South Carolina flipped a seat to the democrats. Texas flipped blue, which is so wild to me. Abdul El-Sayed won his much talked about senate seat in Michigan. Speaking of Texas, Talarico made this humongous push and won out, and his acceptance speech ranks right up there with what Sayed said during his acceptance speech. Atlanta elected their first ever black female governor. A gay man, a trans person, a Native American woman and a Latina woman in Texas won for the first time in history. This is such a big deal. Hell, even in Missouri, where I live, we shot down the redistrict map that the GOP tried to pass off, kept abortion legal and Ann Wagner was finally beat by Fred Wellman, a democrat, knocking her out of her long standing seat in government. That made me so happy when I was watching the returns come in and get announced.

Believe me, I know a ton of work is still left to be done. This is far from over. But damn I feel hope for the first time in a long time in this country. The people spoke up and spoke out. Kids, some who were eligible for the first time, used their vote for good. The awful, horrible, miserable, racist president is pretty much a lame duck for the rest of his term. That makes me so joyous. That monster needed to get his ass kicked, and boy oh boy did he get trounced last night. And that feels so good.

I'm going to celebrate this for a few more days, and when all of the new democrats get sworn in, the real work begins, and I cannot wait. Thank you to all of you who made the right choice and voted for the right people last night. The work has just begun, but damn it feels good to be in control once again. Thank you for this blue wave, now let's get to work.
