Ty Watches the 2024 NFL Draft

Round 1 of the NFL draft happened last night, and I have thoughts.

As you may remember, I did my preview on Wednesday with my five players I liked, five I was down on and two sleepers. Most of the ten players I mentioned on Wednesday were picked last night. The only ones who weren't were Cooper DeJean and my two Michigan "sleepers", Mike Sainristril and Junior Colson. So, of the twelve players I mentioned nine were picked in round 1. That is wild to me.

As for the draft, it was pretty wild, after the first five picks. We all knew that Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye were going to go 1, 2 and 3. I also feel like these three ended up with the best team's to fit their style of play. I feel as if these three dudes are happy and will have varying levels of success, but I think all will be relatively successful. Then we had the best prospect, Marvin Harrison Jr going to the Cardinals. This is perfect all around. MHJ is the instant number 1 wideout, Kyler Murray has a reliable target and the Cardinals have a cornerstone to build around. Then, as Jim Harbaugh is want to do, he took a big offensive tackle to shore up the o line. Then it got a little odd. Malik Nabers was the second wideout off the board to the Giants. I thought it would be Rome Odunze, but I was wrong. Then the Titans reached hard for JC Latham. No disrespect, but there are better o lineman available today to draft than Latham. He should be a fine starter, but not a world beater.

Then the Falcons went nuts and took Michael Penix Jr at 8th overall. I didn't believe my son when he told me the Falcons took Penix Jr. I think he is a very good QB, and I like him and want him to succeed, but why would the Falcons take him, and take him that high? They signed Kirk Cousins this offseason. They have a bunch of young talent that they haven't figured out how to use yet. They need help everywhere on defense. They hired a defensive minded coach. And they took a project QB who is already 24. This was stunning to me. I don't get it at all. These things are why I could never be a GM in the pros. This is a true head scratcher. This is akin to the Bears traded up from 3 to 2 a few years back to draft Mitch Trubisky. I was floored by this pick.

To wash the bad Trubisky taste out of their mouths, the Bears jumped up and took Rome Odunze to pair with Williams and Keenan Allen. It scares me what the Bears did last night being a Packers fan. They got two excellent players in the first nine picks last night. They were the opposite of the Falcons. They made smart picks that help their team. Then RD's Vikings took Michigan's JJ McCarthy. I have said that I have doubts about McCarthy as a pro, but this was his ideal place to be picked. He won't be under the microscope, he has Justin Jefferson to throw the ball too, has a great o line in front of him and he is going into a situation extremely suitable for a rookie QB who may be starting by mid season. It was chalk with the next pick, the Jets taking Olu Fashanu, they need line help.

And then the Broncos reached almost as hard as the Falcons and took Bo Nix. I do not like this pick one bit. Sean Payton is old school, Bo Nix seems soft, he is older than Penix Jr and not nearly as good. I'd be upset if I were a Broncos fan this morning.

Bowers to the Raiders is nothing special to me. They already have a tight end, but Bowers is younger. Then the Saints addressed issues with the o line and took Tailese Fuaga. Then it was three straight defensive picks, Laiatu Lati to the Colts, which helps their pass rush. Then Byron Murphy to the Seahawks and their defensive minded new head coach Mike McDonald. And Dallas Turner to the Vikings. That pick is more impactful to me than JJ McCarthy. Dallas Turner should help make a very bad defense a bit better. The Bengals got one of my favorite players in Amarius Mims. I don't know how Bengals fans feel about this pick, but I love it for them. He will be an all pro in a few years. The Rams took Jared Verse to help and replace Aaron Donald's retirement. They need defense, they need d lineman and they took one of the better ones in the draft. The Steelers took o lineman Troy Fantanu, who will start day one and is a good blocker. Chop Robinson went to the Dolphins next, and hopefully he can make up for some of the guys who left in free agency. The Eagles got the best defensive back in the draft in Quinyon Mitchell. This was the latest example of the Eagles lucking into a star talent in the draft. Brian Thomas Jr is going to the Jags to add depth in the wideout room. Terrion Arnold fits in perfectly in Detroit. The Packers took a big o lineman in Jordan Morgan, which I am stoked about. The Bucs took Graham Barton next, and he will be one of the best centers in the NFL in two years. The Cardinals, after taking MHJ at 4, got edge rusher Darius Robinson from Missouri. This kid is talented and will rack up tackles on the d line. The Chiefs took a big chance, which I think will pay off, drafting Xavier Worthy in round 1. He is fast as lightning, will get a chance from day one, and will be learning from Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. This is a homerun pick. And the final four picks were relatively chalk. The Cowboys got o line depth with Tyler Guyton. The Ravens got more secondary help with Nate Wiggins. The 49ers took Ricky Pearsall, who I was very unaware of, at 31. And the first round ended with the Panther getting Bryce Young an outside threat in Xavier Legette. He is big and fast.

Wrapping this up, I thought, for a draft, that this was kind of wild. It started relatively normal, but then the Falcons decided they wanted to be the talk of the sporting news this morning. And it only got nuttier from there. I'll be watching to see where the rest of the Michigan guys I like go, and where some other players I've watched for four year end up playing. The draft is always an exciting time for fans, and this year has upped the ante. Hopefully we get some more crazy stuff happening. Time will tell.

Ty's 2024 NFL Draft Preview

The first round of the NFL draft starts tomorrow night. As I do every year, I will give you five prospects I like, five I'm not so high on and a few, let's say two, sleepers. I don't do mock drafts. I don't do draft day trades. I don't understand the whole salary cap stuff. I go off eye test. I watch a ton of college football, it is my favorite sport to watch. I know more about college football than any other sport I watch. So, while not a "expert", I think I know this stuff pretty well. Let's get to it.

I'll start with the players I like. This QB class is absolutely loaded. This may be the best crop of QB prospects in the last 10 years. And while Caleb Williams is awesome, and I have my doubts about JJ McCarthy, my favorite QB in this draft, by a long shot, is Jayden Daniels. He is an excellent thrower. He is a wonderful scrambler. He reminds me so much of Randall Cunningham. He is skinny. He needs to bulk up. But, he had the best statistical season of a Heisman QB winner ever. Stats aren't my favorite thing, but I could see how great he can be when I watched LSU this past season. Daniels is the best QB prospect for me. Whatever team picks him is getting a damn good QB. On the defensive side of the ball, I like Dallas Turner from Alabama. I did not see much of him until the Rose Bowl, and he impressed me. He is big, 6'4. He is strong, 250 plus pounds. And he is fast and mean. He can hit. He flies around the field. He played very well against Michigan's o line, which was one of the best in the country. Turner is a day one starter and should be very productive in the NFL. The wideout class in this draft is almost as stacked as the QB class. Therefore, I have two receivers in my personal top five. First we have Marvin Harrison Jr. He is the best overall prospect in this draft. He is the most surefire player. He looks like he is going to have a very long, very impressive career. I don't care about him not working out or going to combine at all. What he did on the football field during games was all I needed to see. Second, we have Rome Odunze. He was the one player that really terrified me going into the college playoff championship against Michigan. He is sure handed, he is big, he is an excellent route runner and he is very fast. He is built like a ready made NFL number 1 receiver. I would jump for joy if Green Bay was somehow able to grab him. Odunze is awesome. My last player that I like, Amarius Mims. He only played nine games his whole college career. He is big, yet hyper athletic. He is raw, but when he figures it out, watch the hell out. He is going to maul players on defense. He is going to become one of the better run blockers in all of football. What he did in his short college career would be so enticing to me. He needs time, but in the end, it will be worth it.

Now to the players I'm not so high on. First off, Bo nix. He is too old. He is not a scrambler. He stayed in college far too long. He was a product of a system. I don't see it, and if he gets picked in round one, that would be a waste of a pick. Then we have Olu Fashanu on the o line. This kid is solid. He is big and can maul people from time to time. But when he had to face a real defense, Michigan for one, he got eaten up by Braiden McGregor and Josiah Stewart. He couldn't keep up with the speed. He got eaten up all afternoon in that game. Fashanu is going to be a long time starter, but being a top 10 pick seems like a reach. On defense I'm not so big on Byron Murphy from Texas. I think there are better options in round one for teams in need of d line depth and production. Murphy seems to be higher on mocks than a guy like Jer'Zhon Newton from Illinois. Newton is a better prospect. I think Chop Robinson is a better pass rusher. And Murphy is nowhere close to Laiatu Latu. Murphy is going to be overdrafted if he goes round 1. I don't like the way Brock Bowers came back after his injury. He was a no doubt first rounder pre injury, but afterward, he just doesn't look the same. He seems slower. His blocking didn't improve far too much. He sat out a bowl game that could have upped his draft stock. I don't like the way his season ended. He will be over drafted. Finally, I think Cooper DeJean is wildly overrated. DeJean got hurt, and hurt bad this past season. He is not the best punt returner. He is just an okay corner. He is small and slow. I'm not a fan at all, which means the Packers will probably take him, and it will drive me nuts. DeJean may be my personal most overrated player in the entire draft.

As for my sleepers, I'm going full on homer here and taking two Michigan guys. First, give me Mike Sainristil all day. He switched positions and became one of the best nickel corners in the country. He did what was best for the team and for himself. He is a great tackler. He can guard slot guys one on one. He is incredibly smart. He can read offenses. And then you have his background as a wideout, which makes him an interception machine. I would reach hardcore for him, possibly in round one. Finally, I have Junior Colson. He is one of the best linebackers to ever come out of Michigan. He was consistent. He was a tackling machine. He can cover backs out of the backfield. He played with broken hands and still put up numbers. He led the best defense in the country last year. Colson is going to be an under the radar guy his whole career, which will probably last well over a decade and most likely end up in the hall of fame. I adore Junior Colson.

That is it for my draft preview. Get ready to see a bunch of QB's and wideouts go tomorrow night. And then when round two starts, that will be where we see some true future stars getting drafted.

Ty's 2023 NFL Draft Not Mock Draft

The first round of the NFL draft is tonight. This afternoon I'm going to do my version of a draft preview. I'm going to give you five prospects I really like, five I'm not so high on, and like a fanboy, I'm going to give you my favorite Michigan player and the one I think will have the best NFL career. This is not a mock draft or anything like that. This is my preview, what I see and where I would pick these players, or not pick. I'll get to the Miami Heat tomorrow, I promise.

This class is stacked with QB prospects. They are up and down the board. I have seen so many QB's being mocked in round 1, especially in the top 10. I like most of them, except who I will name in my second half today, but CJ Stroud is the best. I think he has all the intangibles that one could want. He is big, has a great arm, can run and looks the part. I don't buy into any of these "questions" surrounding him right now. All the Wonderlic stuff, and the test taking stuff doesn't matter to me. I watched him play a lot of football the past two years, and as much as it hurts the Michigan fan in, this dude is legit. He is the QB I would want most of all.

On the defensive side of the ball I am enamored with Will Anderson Jr from Alabama. He is this year's Aidan Hutchinson. He is an instant wrecker in the backfield. He is the most pro ready prospect. He is so big and so fast and so dominant. He may, and should, be the front runner for Defensive Rookie of the Year before even stepping on the field.

Devon Witherspoon is as legit a corner prospect as I have seen in awhile. I didn't know much about him until Illinois played Michigan this year, but I came away impressed with what I saw. He was shut down. Michigan stopped throwing his way. He was on an island because of the blitzing nature of their defense, but he more than lived up to the task. If the Lions somehow get him, their defense is going to be elite. This kid is awesome and any team inside the top 10 would be lucky to have him on their team.

I fully believe that Jordan Addison is the best wideout in this draft. He put up numbers at Pitt and USC. He won the Biletnikoff two seasons ago. He was the number one option for Caleb Williams last season. He is fast and sure handed. He reminds me of Devonta Smith. This kid can ball.

Finally, Jalen Carter is going to wreck stuff in the NFL. He is humongous. It will take two dudes to block him in his rookie year. He was massive for Georgia last season. He kept that defense dominant. He dominated the SEC for two straight years. This kid can really play and he is the second best d lineman behind only Anderson Jr in this draft.

Now for the guys I'm not so high on.

I mentioned all the QB's, Will Levis is not that dude. He is wildly overrated. I remember reading about another Kentucky QB who was going to save the NFL. That QB was Tim Couch. I get those vibes from Levis big time. He also puts mayo in his coffee. Gross.

I am not sold on Jaxson Smith Njigba. He was awesome in college, but he missed a ton of time last year and it didn't look like he was missed all that much. He is also very undersized. He also didn't really show out in prime time games. I don't know what it is with him, but I get a feeling he will not be much of an NFL player.

Zay Flowers is too little and played in a crap conference. I know smaller guys are getting more of a shot at wideout, especially in the slot, but Flowers is so, so small. He is only six inches taller than my 11 year old son. He is fast, and has good hands, but how will he react when he is exploded on by a defensive back with a head of steam? I hope he learns how to catch and fall, but 5'9 is 5'9. I'd love to be proven wrong, like how Barry Sanders proved everyone wrong, but the NFL is different now. That is so small.

Michael Mayer is too slow. I would see him run routes and blow up college defenses. But that was college, against ACC teams. He will be getting covered by the best linebackers and safeties in the world. And they will cut him down at the knees the moment he catches the ball. He won't be able to stay on the field in the NFL.

And then we have Lukas Van Ness. I mean, how many other Iowa defensive ends are we going to trust? They have one decent college season, get overdrafted and then are out of the league. How is Van Ness any different? He is not Micah Parsons, he is not Aidan Hutchinson or Travon Walker. He doesn't have that motor. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Back to good talk. As for my Michigan guy I like, it is Ronnie Bell. Bell was a guy who recovered from a very public drop to win a game four years ago to have his best season. He came back from a torn ACL and was the most productive receiver on the team last season. He was the veteran voice they needed in that locker room. He was an excellent and reliable punt returner. He was also the consummate team player. He did what was asked when it was asked and never complained. He is a Michigan legend in my eyes and I think he is going to have a long and fruitful NFL career. Wherever he gets drafted, that team is going to love him. He will probably start on special teams and continually work his way up to be his team's best slot receiver. I fully believe that.

Enjoy the draft and good luck to all the kids that will be picked over these next four days.

Ty Watches the 2022 NFL Draft First Round

The first round of the NFL draft was last night, and there were some good picks, wild trades and some head scratching stuff. I wrote my preview a few days ago, and today I want to talk about a few things.

First off, the Lions nailed it. Hutchinson "fell" to them at 2. They traded up to get Jameson Williams who I think may be the best receiver in this class. The Lions made picks that should help them in the near future. Williams gives them an immediate deep threat. I know he is coming back from an ACL injury, but all the reports seem to say that he is rehabbing nicely and he should be good to go for the season. Also, teaming him up with Amon Ra Brown gives them a great, and young, receiving duo. Hutchinson is going to have a long and strong career. He is a day one starter, a fun dude in the locker room and has all the tools you want from a pass rusher. These two young guys were great, great picks by a moribound franchise. If I were a Lions fan I'd be happy today.

I could say the same thing for the Giants. They got Thibodeaux at 5. He is as good as Hutchinson. He has amazing burst and get off. He will wreak havoc in NFL backfields for a decade. And to get Evan Neal a few picks after that, that was a homerun. The Giants have done some wild stuff the past couple years. But this season, at least in the first round, they made smart picks that will benefit this team right away. That Neal pick was a genius, genius move. Saquon Barkley is probably pumped right now.

The Eagles made a humongous move, and it was not a pick. But it did happen on draft night. The Eagles acquired AJ Brown for some picks. Brown is an awesome receiver. He wanted out of Tennessee and was given his wish. Now Jalen Hurts has a real weapon on the outside, and Brown is stoked to be going there. That is a big deal. And, not to be outdone, the Eagles still saved a pick and took Jordan Davis out of Georgia for their defensive line. Davis is the biggest human being I have ever seen. He is a bigger and much, much faster Vince Wilfork and he is going to be a great run stopper and gap chewer for this d line. What a pick.

The Ravens will be here twice, but this is the good part. Getting Kyle Hamiltion at 14 was tremendous. He was a highly touted prospect out of Notre Dame, and for him to fall into Baltimore's lap was wild. The Ravens also got some assurance on their o line with Tyler Linderbaum at 25. He may have been the best o lineman in the Big 10 last season. Both guys should be day one starters.

I think the Bengals got a true steal at 31 with Dax Hill. He can cover, can tackle and plays some of the most sound football I have ever watched. That will only help them maintain this elite level of play they had last season.

Some stuff I was not so high on was, first off, the Packers draft. What were they doing? They traded Davante Adams, let a few other receivers go, and with two first round picks they took two studs from Georgia, both of which are defenders. Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt are both very, very good. But the Packers have decent players at both spots. The Packers defense got better last year. They needed offensive help. And I understand they can get that in later rounds. But I was hoping they would trade up to grab a receiver. They chose not to. They went for depth as opposed to need. That is not what the first round should be used for.

I also loathe the Kenny Pickett pick by the Steelers. If they were going to take a QB, why not take Malik Willis? He is clearly the best QB in this class. But the Steelers would rather have a one hit wonder in Pickett learn from Mitch Trubisky. Oof.

I also do not get the Patriots pick at all. What are they doing? I think Bill Belichek might actually be losing the luster of how he drafts after this. It was such a weird pick that Sean McVay openly laughed at it on camera. That was confusing.

I do not like the fact that the Ravens traded Hollywood Brown. That would bum me out if I were Lamar Jackson. I just do not get why they would trade away one of his favorite targets for some picks. That is rough stuff. The Ravens really toed the line of having a good or bad draft night.

I feel for Drake London going to the Falcons. He and Kyle Pitts should make for a good tandem, but they do not have a solid enough QB, and their o line is not the best. They may not get a lot of targets.

The first round was wild and as fun as a draft can be. I'll be curious to see how the rest of the draft goes. If it is anything like the first round, it should get pretty wild and possibly memorable. Time will tell.

Ty's 2022 NFL Draft Preview

The NFL draft starts tomorrow night. I do like the new format, doing the first round in one night and finishing the rest off throughout the weekend. It makes for a bit of a quicker process. They still have the full fifteen minutes in between picks, and I still do now watch, but it is a better system.

Today I am going to do my version of a "mock draft". It feels wrong even calling it a "draft". I will not do picks, trades or any of the other stuff that other writers do on their mock drafts. I like to name a few players I think will be first day starters, some that may not be as good as they are being projected and then a few of my own personal "sleepers". Without further ado, let's get into it.

I am going to start with my "sure things". These are the players that should have good careers. Some will be solid starters and others will become stars.

My first sure thing is my guy Aidan Hutchinson. I know I am a Michigan fan, I have sung his praises a ton and this is a total homer pick. But come on, he is going to be a day one starter. He has incredible speed off the edge. He can bull rush with the best of them. He made other first round picks look human this past season. He comes from a football family. Whatever team drafts him, most likely in the top three, is going to get an all pro caliber player. Hutchinson is the real deal.

Staying on the defensive line, I also really like Kayvon Thibodeaux. I do not get the sour taste that some have for him. He is almost as explosive as Hutchinson. He is big and fast and plays with a mean streak. He is also a plug in on day one starter. He is going to be a force the moment he enters the league. And if he gets passed by a few teams on draft night, he will not forget that and it will only fuel his fire.

On the offensive side of the ball, the lineman in this draft are great. Evan Neal is a beast. He is going to be a starter for a long, long time in the NFL. He is great. So is Ikem Ekwonu from NC State. He is big, can pass and run block and will be an all pro. If they gave out rookie of the year to lineman, he may damn well win it. Charles Cross also has the ability to be a dominant pass blocker. He played in a system that favored passing, and he knows how to get it done.

This class of receivers is also very top notch. Garrett Wilson is small, but he is fast and can get open down the field with the best of them. Jameson Williams is going to be a legit number one when he gets fully healthy. Drake London looks to be one of the most reliable wideouts in the draft. And Chris Olave and Jahan Dotson were stars in the Big Ten on teams that passed exclusively.

I also like Sauce Gardner at corner. He is as lock down as they come. Andrew Booth Jr is also very good and pretty tall. That is a plus.

As for QB's, the only one that I think will be solid, should be a day one starter and will have a solid career is Malik Willis. He has a cannon for an arm, can scramble really well, is big and has the mentality to run a team from the jump.

Now to the guys that I am not so high on.

So running back is a tough one in the modern NFL. I feel like they are disrespected and often get overlooked. I, unfortunately for him as a player, think Breece Hall is going to get picked too soon and have to play too soon. I like Hall, but I think he will be picked far too soon. I'm also a little nervous about Derek Stingley Jr. He only played three games last season, missed a ton of time in the COVID season and has to deal with this Lisfranc injury. He will need time, but I do not think he will get it. Trent McDuffie is good, and I know Michigan did not pass a ton in the early season game, but Washington was pretty bad last season and their defense was not that great. McDuffie is their best player, but he seems a bit undersized and overvalued at this point in the process.

I also do not like any other early mocked QB's. Kenny Pickett is too inconsistent. Matt Corral is coming off injury and seems erratic. Bailey Zappe is a system QB. And Sam Howell is a poor man's Baker Mayfield, and boy oh boy do I dislike Baker Mayfield.

Finally, I do have a few sleepers in this class. Wan'Dale Robinson is a jack of all trades type player. He reminds me of Tyler Lockett with more speed. He was awesome in the SEC and he will do some nice things in the NFL. Calvin Austin III is a great route runner, has some shiftiness and he will be a nice slot receiver in the league. And even though I said that running backs are treated unfairly and are out of the league sooner than usual, I am going to go full homer here and say that Hassan Haskins is going to be the steal of the draft. He is a Saint Louis kid who played his college football at Michigan. How could I not like him? But he is a great blocker, a hard nosed runner, can catch a bit out of the backfield and always falls forward. He beat out a group of five star players to become the starter at Michigan and he was the reason why they had such a great season last year. Haskins is my guy. I not only think he will be very good, I am rooting like hell for him.

That is it for my draft preview. Good luck to all the players about to be drafted.

Ty's Not Mock NFL Draft

football.jpg

The NFL draft is tomorrow night. I know, I was as surprised as many were when I found out earlier this week. As I normally do I will pick a few prospects that I think are going to be great, a few that might not be so good and a few sleepers. This is much more fun than doing a mock draft. I have also already read a ton of those anyway. And, I do watch a ton of college football, so I feel like I know the "top" prospects pretty well in this upcoming draft. I even watched all of last season, even though I didn't feel very good about watching. With that being said, let's get to it.

This draft is filled with QB prospects. I would not be surprised if the first four picks are QB's. There are so many draft eligible QB's. It is almost too much. At the very top of that list, and one of the prospects that I think will be a good to great NFL player is Trevor Lawrence. His college career played out pretty much as great as we all thought, and I see no reason why the Jags wouldn't take him first overall tomorrow night. He is tall, fast, smart, has a great arm and has been getting himself ready as soon as he took over the starting job at Clemson. He is as sure a bet as Andrew Luck or Cam Newton. They were bonafide stars the moment they were taken first overall, and I do not see that being any different for Lawrence. The only downside is the fact that he will be playing in Jacksonville. They do not offer too much help for him when he steps into the starting role. He also has a first year head coach that I do not think will have much success in the NFL. But Lawrence is as solid a QB prospect as there is in this draft. He is worth the hype.

Going outside the QB class, this wide receiver class is stacked too. And there are two kids that I think will have very bright futures in the NFL. The first is JaMarr Chase. He did opt out of last season, but his year before was one of the best I have ever witnessed. He had so many catches, so many TD's, and he separated himself from every other wideout in college football in 2019. His two playoff games were absolutely dominant. And if the Bengals end up taking him, as they should, having him and a healthy Joe Burrow could make for one hell of a duo. They could be the future in Cincinnati.

The other receiver I love, who is actually my favorite player in the draft, is Devonta Smith. His measurables may not be eye popping, but just look at what he did on the field last season. He was incredible. He was so good he won every major award, including the Heisman. He was unstoppable. That first half in the title game was magnetic. I was so very impressed with what I saw. My dream would be that he falls to Green Bay and they team him up with Davante Adams. That would rule. Smith is awesome and he will be a very, very, very good pro.

As far as the O line goes, Penei Sewell is going to be a first day starter wherever he gets picked. He is big, physical, hyper intelligent and saved his body by opting out last season. He is going to be a Jake Long esque player. He won't make any crazy noise as a player, but he will be dominant, and his QB and coaches will love him.

Looking at the defensive players, I think Patrick Surtain is the top of the class. He is already a shutdown corner, he is big and fast and physical and he will be a Charles Woodson type corner in the league. He will help any team, no matter who, that drafts him. I also think Jaycee Horn has some Jaire Alexander in him. He is a very good corner that will excel against better competition. I also like Micah Parsons. I know his stock has tumbled, and the exact same thing happened to Montez Sweat and he is a top notch d lineman. Parsons was excellent two years ago and I think he will only get better when he gets to the NFL. And of course I love Kwity Paye from Michigan. Three years ago at a game my dad pointed him out as a legit sack master, and he just got better and better. He is explosive, big and super fast. He is going to terrorize NFL backfields for ten years. He is going to be a day one starter.

For all the love I have given these kids, there are some I am not as high on as others. I do not think Zach Wilson is going to be the answer for the Jets at QB. He is the epitome of a one year wonder that played inferior competition. He is not a Russell Wilson clone. That is an insult to Wilson's incredible talent. The Jets will be trading him in two years just like they did with Sam Darnold. I also do not think Mac Jones is going to be much of a pro. He is a system QB to a T. He is like every other Texas Tech QB not named Patrick Mahomes. He is also very slow footed and not very accurate in my opinion. At receiver I just do not trust Jaylen Waddle's ankle injury. I do not know that it is fully healed, I do not know what it will do to his speed and route running and he was not the best wideout on his own team. I feel like the hype around Kyle Pitts has been totally overblown so much so that I think it will affect his career. I mean, he is good, but he isn't Tony Gonzalez or Antonio Gates. That's another thing, there are going to be better tight ends that can be drafted in later rounds. The hype is too much. Jalen Mayfield has taken a rightful tumble down draft boards. He seemed disengaged at times, he wasn't as dominant as he could've been and he missed most of last season with an injury. I feel the same about Landon Dickerson from Alabama. He just isn't the dominant force that Sewell or Rashawn Slater will be in the NFL. He also looks very slow.

As far as some "overrated" defensive players, one for sure in my opinion is Zaven Collins from Tulsa. He is the defensive version of Zach Wilson. Poor competition led to a fantastic year, but this rise up draft boards is baffling to me. I also think all the stuff that has happened with Caleb Farley lately has been a blow to any type of success he was going to have in the NFL. He was a top player, then he opted out, then he got hurt and now he has COVID. All of that is a rough start to an NFL career that hasn't even started yet. And I do not think Benjamin St Juste is going to be more than a special teams player in the NFL. He got beat like a drum in college, and that will just continue in the NFL.

As far as sleepers, there are some for sure. I love Nico Collins. He is a great deep threat, he is physical and he is very tall. He will be a proper third of fourth receiver on a good team. Elijah Moore is another really solid receiver that will go way later in the first round than he should. This is another guy that I would love to fall to Green Bay. I also really like Rondale Moore. He is shifty, fast and will help on offense and in the return game. I know that Justin Fields is a projected top five pick, but people have been on his case for some stupid reasons. I watched this kid carve up the Big Ten for two years, and then do the same thing twice to Clemson. He is going to be a very good pro.

I have two deep sleepers. I really like Chubba Hubbard from Oklahoma State. He is going to be a late round pick because running back isn't a huge priority anymore, but boy is he going to be a steal. He is an excellent runner and a very good pass catcher. He can also block. This kid is going to be a pro bowler, and I wouldn't be shocked if he starts as a rookie. I kind of expect it. And finally we have Najee Harris. Maybe you don't see him as a deep sleeper, but no one is talking about him as a first round talent. He is the prototype modern NFL running back. He is built like Leonard Fournette, but he is not nearly as injury prone. He can catch like a modern day Marshall Faulk and rack up yards after. He can run with the best of the best currently in the NFL. He can block like a fullback. When I watched him in the title game the only player that I thought that was better than him on that field was Devonta Smith. If a team like Miami can get him, and reunite him with Tua, that would be great. Or if he lands with an ascending team that is a running back away, like Seattle or Baltimore, he is going to be the answer they need. I really like Najee Harris.

Okay there you have it, my NFL draft primer. Now let's see how things turn out Thursday night.

Ty Watches the 2020 NFL Draft: Round 1

Last night was the first round of the NFL draft, and it went fairly well, and fairly chalk.

The top 3 picks were what everyone was saying they were going to be. Luckily for RD and the Bengals fans out there, they, rightfully so, took Burrow number one. They have their QB now. Washington got the best athlete in the draft in Young and Detroit didn't have any trade offers, so they took Okudah. Then the Giants did what the Giants do and took the third or fourth best offensive tackle in Andrew Thomas. He will be a fine player, but if they wanted a tackle why not Wirfs or Jackson or Becton, who knows. We are talking about a team that took Daniel Jones last year. I am kind of stunned they didn't grab Simmons, but again, the Giants do this every year. The Dolphins pulled the trigger on Tua. They needed a QB, and they went for one of the best college QB's ever, but that injury still terrifies me. I hope he has time to sit and watch before they throw him out there. Then Herbert went, but this was another one of the foregone conclusions of the draft, and I think it will take some time before Herbert gets real playing time. The Panthers reached for Derrick Brown, but he will be a fine interior D lineman I suppose. The Cardinals got my favorite player in the draft, Isiah Simmons, and I really, truly believe they are on the come up. The Cardinals will be a solid team for a good long time. The Jags got their Ramsey replacement in CJ Henderson and then two O lineman went off the board, with Jedrick Willis going to Cleveland and Becton going to the Jets. Then the Raiders reached for Ruggs. They went with speed again, as they have always done. They could've had any receiver and they chose Ruggs. I would have gone with Jeudy, but I am not a scout, GM or coach. Wirfs landed in Tampa, and Tom Brady has his blind side protection. The fact that he fell to 13 is wild to me. The 49ers took another interior D lineman in Kinlaw, and this pick surprised me. They already have a great defense, and they need better wide outs. Jeudy ended up in Denver and Drew Lock should be very pleased. They got the best athlete on offense in the draft. The Falcons went with defense, which they needed to do, and got a solid corner in AJ Terrell. The Cowboys added another offensive weapon, and they took CeeDee Lamb. He is good, fast and has solid ball skills, but he won't stop anyone on defense. The Dolphins, with their second first round pick, got a day one starter in Austin Jackson. He is a solid tackle. The Raiders then took a second round talent in the top 20 in Damon Arnette. I know they need help everywhere, but they could've gotten this kid in round 2 or 3. The Jags went defense again and took K'Lavon Chaisson, and he is a solid linebacker that will be a 10 year player. Two more receivers went to Philly and Minnesota next. The Eagles got Jalen Raegor, who I wanted Green Bay to pick. He is good and fast. Minnesota took Justin Jefferson, and RD, this kid is going to be very good. He will easily replace Stefon Diggs. The Chargers took Kenneth Murray next, and while I am not high on him, he is going to a team already loaded on defense. He can sit and learn. One of my Michigan guys was next, when the Saints took Caesar Ruiz. He is a good, modern center, and the video of him tearing up after they showed his father, who has passed, on screen was very moving. The 49ers then took a receiver that, quite frankly, I know nothing about. They took Brandon Aiyuk, and while I think they need help at that position, I don't know why they didn't just go with Jeudy at 13.

Then my team, Green Bay, made the wildest decision of the first round, taking QB Jordan Love. I don't think it is as awful as others do, but I also don't get it. They could've gone receiver as well, maybe traded up for Raegor, or they could've gone linebacker, but they chose a backup, raw QB. At least he will be sitting for awhile, but while I am not as low on this pick, I truly do not get it, especially from the Packers, who usually draft smart. I will say, the last time they picked a QB I didn't like, it was Aaron Rodgers. Maybe they can prove me wrong again.

From there on out, it was pretty chalk. The Seahawks kept their first round pick and took a solid linebacker in Jordyn Brooks. The Ravens shored up their already awesome defense with Patrick Queen from LSU. Tennessee got a protection and hole opening tackle in Isaiah Wilson, which is what they need. Miami, with their third first round pick, which is wild, took a solid corner in Noah Igbinoghene. They are building a solid team there. Brian Flores is going to do good things with this squad. Minnesota took TCU corner Jeff Gladney next, and that pick is as ho hum as they come. And the Chiefs closed out round one with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, running back from LSU, proving further that they just want to get more and more weapons around Mahomes to defend their title.

Like I said, outside a few odd picks, this was a chalk draft. The only true surprises were Andrew Thomas going so early and the Packers trading up to take Jordan Love. Other than that, all solid, understandable picks. If I had to pick a "winner" of the first round I am going to go with Arizona. They got my favorite player, and the player I consider to be the best athlete in the draft in Simmons. He is going to be instantly great. I am also happy that Ruiz went round one, and went earlier than I thought. Now I bet the rest of the draft will be a bit more intriguing, with more trades and more reaches and steals. We shall see.

Ty's 2020 Not Mock NFL Draft

Seeing as how they are doing a NFL draft tomorrow, via the internet, and it is still blowing my mind that they are doing it this way and not just waiting a month or so, I do want to do my style of a draft guide. I don't like doing a pick by pick thing. Last year I picked 10 players I thought were going to be very good and 5 busts. This year I want to go position by position, putting interior offensive and defensive line as a whole group, as in, I won't go nose guard, tackle, defensive end, or guard, tackle center, I will pick players for the whole interior. I will pick one player I think will hit, and explain, one that will bust, and explain, and a mild to deep sleeper. This seems like a fun way to approach this very odd, very complex draft.

Real quick though, even though I think there will be tons and tons of mess ups, I am stoked that there is going to be a draft. It gives us sports people a fix. And, I will get to the Gronk trade tomorrow. Believe me I have a ton to say about that whole thing. Lets get to the draft now.

Quarterback

I'm going to start where every NFL team starts, and that is with the QB position. I'm not as sold on this class as other writers and people on TV, but I do still have some thoughts. As for my prospect that will, or should hit, I have Joe Burrow, just like everyone else. You don't have a season like he did and then just flame out. He is agile, has arm strength and is wildly accurate. The only downside I see from him is the Bengals. They will need to find a way to protect him. Even still, he will be a solid rookie, and I think he will have, at the very least, a solid NFL career.

As for the bust, I have already written about him, but I just don't trust Tua. The injury scares the hell out of me. The kid is an incredible talent, but that injury ended Bo Jackson's career. And no one has seen him go through a real workout. I hope I am wrong because I like him, but I am just so scared of that injury.

As for my sleeper, I am going with Jalen Hurts. He is the new era QB. He already had the mobility, and last year at Oklahoma proved he can throw. He is going to be, at the very least, a weapon for whatever team takes him in the third or fourth round. He is also a good dude with a great attitude.

Running Back

So running backs are a dying breed, but there are still a few in this draft that could work as later round picks. I wouldn't take one in the first round, but late round two or early third, I would jump at some of these guys. My prospect that will hit is Johnathan Taylor. He is big, fast, durable and destroyed great defenses in college. He is on a long list of Wisconsin running backs that tore up college, but I feel like he will be the first to really, truly succeed.

My bust is Cam Akers. I loved this kid his freshman year at FSU, but it was all downhill from there. He never really got better over the next 2 years. He is also small, fumbles a bit and can easily get hurt. I had high hopes in college, and those weren't met. I don't think he will translate well to the NFL.

My sleeper, and it's not that deep, is JK Dobbins. This kid destroyed the Big Ten for two years, he put up similarly huge numbers like Taylor and he is a ball of strength. He is a bigger, stronger Doug Martin, except he will be better.

Wide Receiver

Shifting to receiver, this class is absolutely loaded. It is as deep as any group in a very, very long time. I had a good amount of trouble finding guys to pick for my prospect that will hit. I finally settled on Jerry Jeudy, but honestly, I could've picked any Alabama receiver. But Jeudy looks to be the biggest, second fastest, runs the best routes and has tremendous hands. I am hoping he falls to Green Bay, but I don't think he lasts outside of the top 10. He has a good mixture of Amari Cooper and Julio Jones. Jeudy is great.

As for my bust, and this hurts so much for me personally, I have Donovan Peoples-Jones. I rooted so hard for this kid for three years, and had such high hopes. He had tons of moments at Michigan, but he was more injured than not. He also was nowhere to be found in big games. He also drops the ball at a Braylon Edwards rate, especially when going over the middle. I hope he proves me wrong, really hope, but he just tailed off too much last season at Michigan.

As for my sleeper, I'm going with Jalen Reagor from TCU. This may not be a sleeper to you, but he played in a run option offense, yet put up stellar numbers. This is a guy that could actually land in Green Bay, and while he isn't Jerry Jeudy, he will do just fine.

Tight End

At tight end, and this is not the same level as wideout, I just don't really know. As for my top prospect, I guess I will go with Hunter Bryant from Washington. He is a big target with good hands and can block some. He will be fine.

For my bust, again I have no idea, I will go with Cole Kmet from Notre Dame because other people seem to love him, and since I am a Michigan fan, I am just going full on hater here.

My sleeper is Thaddeus Moss. He was so crucial in LSU's explosive offense, he is big and he will score TD after TD. Moss isn't his dad, but he will be a solid pro.

Offensive Line

As for the interior O line, my top prospect is Tristan Wirfs frim Iowa. He is huge, he is a roadblock and he can be a cornerstone for 10 plus years. O lineman are boring picks, but also the safest, and Wirfs is top of the list this year.

As for my bust, and again this is hard because O line is so easy to hit, I am going with Meckhi Becton from Louisville. I know people love him, but Louisville was so average, and he played in a very heavy read option offense. I don't see what others do in him.

My sleeper, and I am fanning out here, is Caesar Ruiz. He was the captain of the Michigan O line, he was the most important guy and he was the most improved on a very improved O line last season. I was sad to see him leave early, but I get it. He is going to be a day one starter in the NFL and he will be around for a very long time. He is a prototype modern offensive lineman.

Now lets shift to defense. I fully believe the cliche that defense wins titles, and there are some solid defensive players to load your team around in this draft.

Safety

At safety my prospect that will hit is Grant Delpit from LSU. He reminds me so much of Jamal Adams, except with better ball skills. Adams is a better hitter, but he is also on an awful team, so I don't think he is as respected as he should be. I think Delpit can end up in San Francisco, or Chicago, somewhere with a solid defense, and he will have a similar type career, but be more highly regarded.

As for the bust of this class I have Antoine Winfield Jr. Yes he has tremendous ball skills, he got a ton of interceptions and was the key to Minnesota's defense, but I just don't see it from him. The interceptions means college teams weren't afraid to throw to his side, and he did get beat some too. He has the name recognition, but I'm not sold.

As for my sleeper, I'm going division 1-AA here, and going with Jeremy Chinn from Southern Illinois. I hadn't heard of him until recently, but I saw some of his highlights, and this kid is good. He is going to be a solid special teams guy at the start, and he will be a starter sooner rather than later. He is also very big for a safety as well.

Corner

Switching to corner, how can you not have Jeffrey Okudah as the top guy. He is so arrogant and cocky and seems like a real asshole, but the kid can play. He is as shutdown as they come right now. I have to say, seeing him get torched by Trevor Lawrence was hilarious to me, but that was an outlier. He is really good, and if Detroit passes on him, it will be another in a long line of mistakes for them. I loathe that I have so many University of Ohio State players as top prospects, but they had a loaded team last year.

My bust corner is Kristian Fulton from LSU. Outside Delpit, the LSU defense got torched at times. Also, without Delpit, Fulton wouldn't be as highly regarded. Fulton was helped so very much by being on the same team as a legit top 5 potential pick. He was part of a secondary that let Ole Miss gain a million yards on them.

My sleeper at corner is Jaylon Johnson from Utah. He is 6 feet tall, almost 200 pounds and has some speed. He will be a solid slot corner that turns into a lock down corner within a year or two. Corners that big don't come around often, and I would jump at a chance to take him in the second or third round if he is still available.

Linebacker

Moving on to linebacker, Isiah Simmons is without question the best linebacker, and for me, the best player in the draft. He can do it all. I could have put him at safety or corner too, and he would be number one. He is so good, can do it all and will change the fortunes of whatever team takes him very early on in the draft. Simmons is dream modern prospect on defense.

My bust is Kenneth Murray from Oklahoma. I think he looks like a traditional linebacker, and he can hit, but I just cannot shake how much LSU exposed him in the playoff. They attacked him in the air and on the ground. I have images of him heaving and laying on the ground to try and get off the field. He got dusted by a team filled with NFL talent. I think he will just be okay, not team altering.

My sleeper at linebacker is Troy Dye from Oregon. He is fast, used to playing spread teams and can cover and hit. He will be a solid team dude as well. I could see him being a quieter version of Luke Kuechly. I think he has that in him.

Defensive Line

Chase Young is the guy. He is the best D line prospect since Jadaveon Clowney, and he may be better. To me he is a bigger and stronger Julius Peppers. Young wrecked backfields all year, and I think he will do the same in the NFL. If Washington doesn't take him I would be absolutely stunned.

My bust is Javon Kinlaw. I know he is big and strong, but leaving the Senior Bowl and not doing the combine left a bad taste. I know his spot is secure, but he isn't a QB or skill player, guys who normally do that. I wanted to see his times and other stuff, but he decided not to compete claiming he was injured. I don't know about all that.

My sleeper is Josh Uche. Again, fan boy here, but this kid was great, and he became a sack machine for Michigan over the past two years. He is quick, has good hands and can move. He was constantly in the backfield the past two years. I will forever be thankful to my dad for pointing him out to me early two years ago when we were at a game. He has been a joy to watch, and I think he will be a great NFL pass rusher.

So there you have it, my version of a pre draft ranking of some players. I do want to say, I hope all the kids I considered "busts" prove me wrong. I don't like to judge children that are so much more talented than I have ever been. I want them to all have success. That being said, this draft will be odd, but I stoked it is coming, and I am interested to see how wild this thing gets because I think, especially in the later rounds, it is going to be real wild. We will find out starting tomorrow. Oh, and one last thing, I hope the Bengals do the right thing and take Burrow number one because I don't want to hear RD yell at me about it for years, and this is the most perfect situation that franchise could ever fall in to. They better not screw it up for a ton of people's sake.

Who Should Draft Tua Tagovailoa?

The NFL draft is a little over a month away. Come April I will do my type of preview, where I pick players I like and dislike. But today I want to spend my time talking about Tua Tagovailoa.

First things first, Tua is a very, very, very good QB. He came in as a backup in a title game two years ago and won the game for Alabama. His pass in overtime was one of the most perfect throws I have ever seen. The fact that he took a sack earlier in that series, dusted himself off, and made that throw, that was when I knew he was a special football player.

Tua then comes back the next year, beats out Jalen Hurts as a starter and takes Alabama to another title game. This made his legend grow even further. But, the title game showed some flaws. Sure, it is not his fault that the Alabama defense gave up a million yards and tons of points. Still though, Tua got outplayed by a true freshman, and he looked a little overmatched when playing a defense that had pros on it.

He came back for this season, and he started like a house on fire. He was great. He looked like the Tua from two years ago. Then the minor injuries started. He missed a game here and there for knicks and bruises. He then suffered a pretty severe ankle sprain. Still, he came back, won a few important games and looked like he was going to be just fine.

Then Tua got brutally injured in an unimportant game during the regular season. I don't remember who Alabama was playing, or what game it was, but I remember after hearing about the injury I had two thoughts, uh oh, and why was he in there. Then I heard more and more about the injury, and the more news that came out, the worse it got for Tua. It appeared he had broken his hip. This is one of the worst injuries a football player can sustain. I immediately thought of Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson is one of my all time favorite athletes. He played two pro sports at All Star level. He was lightening in a bottle. He is a once in a generation talent. He is the type of player where the word "legend" is the only proper way to describe him. Tua suffered a very similar, if not the exact same injury. That injury ended Bo's career. He was never the same after that. Now, I know that Bo was a little older, and maybe more susceptible. But, no disrespect to Tua, Bo is a much, much, much better athlete than Tua could ever dream of being, and this injury did him in. I understand all the stories. The stuff about his injury is healing way better than expected, that he was crushing interviews at the combine, that he will be able to do drills starting March 9th, and he will have a pro day and that Washington, who is picking second, and took a QB in the first round last year, might draft him if he has a good pro day. I get all of that. I also have watched enough football to understand that these stories are leaked by people that will benefit from Tua being a high pick, and keeping his name in the news.

Again, Tua was, maybe still is, a great QB prospect. But, I would be so, so hesitant to take Tua anywhere in the first round. I spoke to my father earlier today and I told him that Tua needs to go to a team where he can sit, watch, practice and heal even more. I look at teams like New England or Indianapolis or even a spot like Tennessee. All these teams will provide him all the things I think he needs to be a starter level QB in the NFL. But, if a team like Miami or Washington or Cincinnati, a place where he will have to play immediately, it will doom him. I mean, this injury took out Bo Jackson. I cannot overstate enough how big a deal that is. Tua is great, but he is no Bo.

This injury is brutal, I feel for Tua that he has to deal with this, but if I were a GM, I would try to find any other player to take, especially in the first round, before I would take Tua. He has a long, long way to go before he is back to himself, if he ever gets back.

Who Did Good and Who Did Not So Good in NFL Draft

The NFL draft finally ended on Saturday night. As I have done the past couple of years I want to single out a few teams that I thought did good, and a few that did not do so good. I don't do the whole losers and winners thing because, honestly, none of us know how these players are going to pan out. The draft in any major sport is the biggest crap shoot because there are no real guarantees. Yes, they are some guys that are deemed "can't miss" that go on to have great careers, but there are just as many that flame out of the league in less than 3 years. So, we will not know for awhile who lost or won the 2019 draft. It takes time.

With that being said, lets get the teams that I didn't think did so well out of the way first. First, and this is the easiest one for me, the Giants made one of the worst reaches in draft history when they traded all the way up to 6 to take Duke QB Daniel Jones. I have read since the first day of the draft that the Giants heard that Denver and Washington really wanted him, and he wouldn't be there at 17, and the new GM saying, "we will see how dumb I am in three years". I don't think any of that is true. I  don't think those two teams wanted him. All I heard from Denver was how much they loved Drew Lock. Then they traded the 10th overall pick, so they didn't seem to keen on picking up a QB in the top 10. Washington seemingly wanted a QB, but I think they liked both Lock and Dwayne Haskins. I did not read one story about how much they loved Jones. That was never a thing. All that talk was just that, talk. And the new GM, Dave Gettleman, while he thinks he may be a genius in three years, he looks like a colossal idiot today. Jones was never the top QB in this draft. If anything, he was the fourth ranked one behind Kyler Murray, Haskins and Lock. Hell, I even saw people rating Will Grier ahead of him. This was a rough decision made by a GM that has screwed up 2 straight drafts. Last year he took Saquon Barkley second overall, and while Barkley was tremendous as a rookie, the Giants won 4 games. Last year they could've taken a QB and it would have been much better for them in the near future. And then this year, with the trade up to get Jones, he sets this team back even more. He took the wrong QB this year, he took the wrong skill guy last year, and his undying loyalty to the washed Eli Manning will inevitably be his downfall. The Giants are one of the worst teams heading into the 2019 NFL season.

The other team that I thought really screwed up their draft was the San Francisco 49ers. First off, Nick Bosa is an overrated tool. He is not as good as his brother. He is a racist. He barely played last year. And he is an ego maniac. I hope that kid busts like Steve Entmann. Beyond that though, this team needed young defense, and instead, they went with young skill guys in the later rounds. They didn't get any of the top receivers, they took 2 different running backs, they got no O line help, it was a mess. They outdid the Raiders in taking athletic players as opposed to players they needed. I wasn't too high on the 49ers to begin with, I thought they were vastly overrated last year, I don't think Jimmy Garoppolo is a top tier QB, and Kyle Shanahan is proving he may be better suited as a coordinator, not a head coach. He has some nice new weapons, but it won't matter when teams are scoring 35 points a game because their secondary is so bad. The 49ers had a chance to shore that side of the ball up and they didn't. Their draft was baffling to me. And again, I hope Nick Bosa is so awful because he is a truly awful human being.

Now to the teams that I thought did a fine job in the draft. As much as I hate to praise this team because it's like giving the bad guys in "Star Wars" credit, the Patriots crushed the draft yet again. They got N'Keal Harry at the end of the first round. He is going to fit in just perfectly with this team, and he gets to have Tom Brady throw the ball to him. They got Chase Winovich in the mid third round, and he is going to be a plug and play energy guy for them. They got more backs that can catch. They tool O lineman that will get to sit a year and learn under Dante Scarnecki. And they got a QB very late that can sit behind Brady for a few years. I think Jarrett Stidham should be thanking his stars that the Patriots took him. That could not be a better situation for him. He's going to get the best coaching in the NFL and he gets to learn behind the greatest QB of all time. I feel so dirty giving the Patriots any credit, but man did they crush this draft.

Finally, the team that laid a total egg against the Patriots in the Super Bowl, the LA Rams, probably had my favorite draft, and they didn't even have a first round pick. But what they did in the later rounds was very impressive. They got the best safety in the second round with the 61st pick, Taylor Rapp. He's hard hitting, will start right away and helps put a secondary in desperate need. They also took David Long, a corner from Michigan, in the third round. He is from LA, he too will start from day one and he is a shut down type player. I watched him dominant his side of the field for the last two years. He didn't have eye popping stats because no one threw his way. He is going to be a steal. They got some Todd Gurley insurance by taking Memphis running back Darrell Henderson. That kid averaged almost 8 yards a carry in college. That is insane. He is also super fast and a solid pass catcher. That was a great pick. They got some O and D line help in the later rounds, and they took Dakota Allen, he was on the second season of "Last Chance U", and he is a very solid linebacker. I could see him as a special teams stud for a few seasons, then taking over as a starting linebacker very soon. The Rams addressed what they needed to, got some insurance and just really hit a homerun.

As I said at the top, we will see how all of these players truly pan out in about 2 or 3 years, but from where I sit today, these are the teams that I thought did not so good, and did some great things.

Ty's 2019 Not Mock NFL Draft

The first round of the 2019 NFL draft is tonight. I know I did a mock last year but this year I want to change things up a bit. Mock drafts are all good and fun, but I want to do my list of who I think are the 20 best players in the draft. I’ll rank them in descending order and give a sentence or two as to why I have the players where I have them. I am also going to give you 5 players that I don’t think will be as good as others do after I rank  my top 20. My list is also going to be boring. In this draft I love the defensive line and offensive line. I also think linebacker is solid. I needed you to know this going in. Spoiler alert, I have zero QB’s in my top 20. More to come on that near the end. Okay, here it goes.

20-Nasir Adderly. Adderly played lower level college ball, but the dude is a ball hawk and a heavy hitter. I’d love for the Packers to take him late in the first round. Whoever takes him will get a steal.

19-Chris Lindstrom- Lindstrom is a bulldozing O lineman that paved the way for one of the best rushing attacks in college. He’s big, has quick hands and feet and will start from day one. He’s a solid late first rounder.

18-AJ Brown- Brown is only one of 2 receivers that I like in this draft. Brown is a solid route runner with excellent hands. If the right team takes him, either Green Bay or New England, he’s going to be a star.

17-Marquise Brown- This is the other wideout I like. Yes he’s very, very small, but he is a speed freak. He’s also a great route runner. He’s going to be a burner, and I think he’s going to be so much better than Percy Harvin ever was

16-Taylor Rapp- He may be “slow”, as far as 40 yard dash times go, but he can cover. He’s the best secondary player in the draft as well. He’s an instant starter with ten year career easily

15-Jerry Tillery- As much as I dislike his college team, this dude is a disrupter. He destroys backfields and can get to the passer. He’s one of the better D lineman in this draft

14-Greg Little- Here’s another big, dominant O lineman. Little is humongous and a road grater. He’s going to be a right tackle projecting ahead, and he has future pro bowler written all over him

13-Cody Ford- Much like Little, Ford is enormous. He’s a better pass blocker though, and with the NFL shifting that way, he’s going to excel. He will be a late first steal

12- Rashan Gary- I’ve heard the criticism, but I don’t buy it. I watched this kid take on double and triple teams for three years and it allowed other guys to shine. Gary is a beast, the physical traits are amazing, and he’s going to make teams that pass on him regret it. He’s an amazing football player

11-Greedy Williams- He’s fast, he has great ball skills, he was the guy on a dominant defense and can be a shutdown corner. He’s also got a kickass name

10- Devin Bush- Bush is a wrecking ball. He’s a hitter. He plays with an immense passion. I watched him for three years as well, and loved everything I saw. He’s going to be a very, very good pro. I’ll miss him most next season

9-Brian Burns- Burns is tall, but explosive and can make moves that put him in the correct spot. He can make himself small and flexible. He’s so big and agile. He’s got quality traits for such a big D lineman

8- Jawaan Taylor- Sure, he was a lineman in a spread option offense that focused on the run, but this kid can learn to pass block as well. I watched him crush Michigan’s D line in the bowl game, and thought then that he was going to be good. He’s also 6’5, which is an added feather in his cap. He’s going to be solid

7-Andre Dillard- Dillard is the opposite of Taylor. He was in a spread pass offense, but he too has the tools to run block, and to do it well. He also exploded at the combine. He’s a legit top 5 pick to me

6-Christian Wilkins- He was the best D lineman on the best D line in college football last year. He has great hands, feet and technique. He’s also humongous. He is destined to start and shine from day one

5-Montez Sweat- I know he has some red flags, but his on field performance should have teams aching to draft him. He’s big, fast and physical. He will also relentlessly get to the opposing QB. If he fumbles on draft day, he’s going to be the steal of the draft

4- Jeffery Simmons- Simmons is Sweat’s lesser known teammate, but he’s just as good and has zero red flags. He’s a pure run stopper, perfectly placed as a nose guard

3-Devin White- White is the best linebacker in the draft. He’s speedy and can cover. He also has range sideline to sideline. He’s the prototype of the modern linebacker. I might take him first overall if I were a GM

2- Quinnen Williams- I mean, when you’re the best player on Alabama, that speaks volumes. He does it all on the D line. He can stop the run and pass. He takes on multiple O lineman to open things up for linebackers and the secondary. He’s as good as it gets

1- Josh Allen- This Josh Allen, from Kentucky, I adore. He is a great, great edge rusher. He reminds me of Khalil Mack, except with more shine coming out of college. He can also cover. He is the type of hybrid D lineman that is taking over the NFL. I’d run to the podium to take him

Those are my top 20 guys. I think all of them will, at the very least, have solid careers. They’ll all contribute, and some, will become stars. Now let’s get to the players I’m a bit down on.

5- Nick Bosa- This has nothing to do with my fandom. This kid sat out all of last year with an injury. He likes the “president”. He called “Black Panther” overrated, and he’s not his brother. I feel like he’s going to flop and flop hard. I think he’s egotistical and I think he thinks it’s going to be easy for him. It won’t be. I think he’s extremely overrated

4- Kyler Murray- I think Murray is a fine QB, but I wouldn’t put my franchise in his hands. I also think he picked the wrong sport. I don’t think Baker Mayfield is as good as some do, and I get the same feeling from Murray. He’s also small and frail. And he can always quit to play baseball. No way I’d take him first overall

3- Dwayne Haskins- He’s the only QB I “like” in this draft, but I truly don’t like any of them. He’s also very immobile, played in a gimmick college offense, seemed disinterested at times and has sloppy footwork outside of the pocket. I don’t think he’s a first rounder, let alone a top 10 pick

2- Drew Locke- I’ve already written a whole thing on him, and my mind hasn’t changed since then. He’s sloppier than Haskins, he believes in his arm to a concerning extent, he never really shined in big games and is more lucky than good. He is a smaller Blaine Gabbert. He’s a bust

1- Daniel Jones- Jones is a Ryan Leaf level red flag to me. He may look like a prototypical NFL QB, but that’s the only NFL thing about him. He’s inconsistent, never played well in big games, choked when he was on national TV, tried too often to rely on his legs and cannot throw the deep ball with any kind of accuracy. I think it’s hilarious that Washington and the Giants are reportedly “enamored” with him. That would be so fitting if one of those teams traded up to get him. He’s going to be a major bust. This I’m almost sure of.

Alright, there you have it. I’ll be curious to see where everyone ends up, and if I was wrong or right. It all starts tonight. Let’s get to it.

Is Drew Locke the Next Great NFL QB Bust?

With the NFL draft a little over a week away, and yes, I will be doing a mock draft, I want to take a moment to talk about GM's, and how they get so enamored with one prospect, they are almost willing to set their franchise back a decade.

This came to mind when I had a conversation with my father earlier today. We were talking about the upcoming draft, and how we aren't really impressed with any of the top QB's. I think Kyler Murray is a bit too small and fragile. I do not like Daniel Jones at all. He has bust written all over him. I think Dwayne Haskins has the skills to be okay, but it is going to take a lot of time, and he played in a gimmicky offense in college. And then there is Drew Locke.

Let me start off by apologizing to 2 of my brothers, RD and Ross, but I do not think Locke is a first round talent. I have actually seen this kid a few times live, and I left kind of shrugging. Yes he is good, and I think he will be a fine backup QB, but I saw a mock the other day that had him at 2nd overall, with the Broncos trading all the way up from 10 to get him.

This is insane to me. He is inconsistent. He makes poor choices. He lucks into throws. He has horrendous footwork. But, John Elway is obsessed with him. Sure, he traded for Joe Flacco, but he is just about done. In fact, he is done. So, I think Elway looks at Flacco as a one year starter, then it will be Drew Locke time.

This is nuts. Elway seems to think that he will be able to will Locke into being a top tier NFL QB. He seems to think that he can put him on this team, with this defense, that is going to start to change and age out, and he will lead them to a Super Bowl like he did, and Peyton Manning did. I do not see that at all. I get big time Blaine Gabbart vibes from Locke, except he isn't nearly as tall as Gabbart. And yes, Gabbart is still in the league, but he is a joke now.

But, Elway could care less. He is damn determined to get Drew Locke, and if any of these mock drafts are to be believed, he is willing to trade a ton of current and future picks to get him. If this is to happen, I feel like it will just push this team back 5,6, 7 years, at least. If I were a player like Von Miller or Bradley Chubb, I would not be happy with this infatuation from Elway towards Locke. The offense is not that young, save for Phillip Lindsay, and putting Locke back there, even if it doesn't happen until 2020, would spell doom.

As I said, this reminds me of when the Jaguars took Blaine Gabbart. The GM then was obsessed with his size. We can also look at when the Jags moved on from Gabbart and took Blake Bortles. He was more mobile and had just as strong an arm. Neither guy is there anymore, and both are cautionary tales. We can go back further and look at when the Bears and Bengals became obsessed with Cade McNown and Akili Smith. McNown was a mobile lefty and he was going to be the face of the Bears. Smith was this superstar athlete that would make the Bengals fun again. I think both lasted less than 3 years in the league. We can go back just a few years and look at Washington taking RG3 third overall. That worked out great for about 16 games, then he wrecked his knee, played in a playoff game he shouldn't have played in, and now, he is more known for getting his hair lined for the first time ever. Look at the Raiders and Jamarcus Russell, The Davis family was fascinated by his size and arm. He is one of the biggest busts of all time. I can even go back to last year when the Bills traded up a few picks to take Josh Allen. He has this humongous arm, but he is wildly inaccurate and likes to break the pocket more than scan the field for receiver. Or look at the Bears 2 years ago. They traded away a ton of future picks to take Mitch Trubisky, and he is not that great. At least they have a good team around him. And of course we have Ryan Leaf. I know that Peyton Manning was taken one pick before him, but the Chargers could have had Charles Woodson, who is a Hall of Famer. The GM felt that they needed a QB, and he assumed that Leaf was the second best. He was very, very wrong. And I think the very same thing will happen if John Elway, who is a racist jackass, and loves this current "government", trades the farm to get Drew Locke. I think it would be a bad, franchise changing move.

Final word. The draft is always a crap shoot, and Drew Locke is about as uncertain a prospect as I have ever seen.

The Cleveland Browns Choked in the 2018 NFL Draft

The Browns somehow managed to mangle any good thing they did this offseason last night with their 2 picks in the top 4 of the draft. The Browns are the Browns. Should we have expected competency?

Now, I did say in my mock draft yesterday that I thought the Browns had made some solid decisions, what with all the movement they had, and they would do better come the fourth overall pick. I assumed, much like everyone else, that they would take Baker Mayfield number one. No disrespect to Mayfield, in fact, I love that he walked on to two major college football teams, won the Heisman and then became the number one overall pick, but this kid is not going to be the savior Cleveland thinks he's going to be. He is too short, he is a system QB, he cannot make deep throws, he is accurate, but so is Sam Bradford. I just see him as a less volatile Johnny Manziel. He will miss open guys, he will get battered in the backfield and he will succumb to the mediocrity that has over taken all of the Browns QB's since they became an NFL team again. I just do not get why they thought he was the best overall player and QB in the draft. Also, and RD pointed this out to me, they could've taken Barkley number one overall, I feel like he is the best player in this draft, and Mayfield still would have been there at 4. They still could've gotten him, but they jumped the gun. Do the Browns really think the Giants or Jets were going to take him? They couldn't have truly thought that. That would have been insane. But, we are talking about the Browns after all. And maybe they do truly believe that Mayfield is bulletproof, that he is the next Russell Wilson or Drew Brees and that he will lead them back to the playoffs. I don't. I think he is, at best, the fourth best QB in this draft. I had Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold and Lamar Jackson ahead of him. He was right there, at least to me, with that Allen kid from Wyoming, and I think that kid is terrible.

Side note, the Bills trading up to draft Allen was utterly stupid. That was Cleveland Browns stupid. But hey, maybe Baker Mayfield will be better than I think, but he will not turn around that franchise.

Just when I thought that the Browns couldn't be any dumber, they passed up on Bradley Chubb for Denzel Ward at number 4 overall. Now, I think Ward will be a fine corner, but Chubb was right there, sitting and waiting to be picked. He and Garrett, as I said yesterday, would have made for a ferocious defensive end combo. They would have been a younger, healthier version of JJ Watt and Jadaveon Clowney. They would have wrecked so many backfields. I know that I bag on the Browns offense, and deservedly so, but their defense is okay and it could've gotten so much better last night. Had they taken Chubb that would have vaulted their defensive line into one of the best in the league. And in one season, a defensive line that is good could reap enormous rewards, just ask Jacksonville. They went out and spent money on defense last year, some of it on the D line, and they were one of the best D line's in football. They caused so much pressure and havoc last year. They called themselves "Sacksonville", and for a guy that doesn't like when teams or players give themselves nicknames, that one is pretty solid. The Browns could have had something similar had they taken Chubb. But no, they decided they needed help in their secondary?!

What the hell.

Didn't they take Jabrill Peppers last year and cut Joe Haden to clear room for the guys they already had in their secondary waiting? I mean, I thought that's what they were doing. But, they took Denzel Ward. And again, I'm not knocking this kid, I do think he will be an okay player, but Chubb is going to be an absolute star. The Browns passed up as sure a thing as there was in this draft to take a chance on a corner back. I will never understand that pick. And Chubb is got to be thrilled because now he gets to play with Von Miller and Shane Ray up in Denver. What a dumb and costly mistake the Browns made. Just when I was starting to buy into, just a little bit, what they were doing, they go and pull these shenanigans last night. I just it shouldn't surprise me, but it does.

These were some awful mistakes, and if the Browns go winless again, it wouldn't surprise me. Enjoy Johnny Manziel 2.0 and a corner that may or may not be good. You could've gotten a great running back and the best player in the draft, but you are the Browns and you did exactly what we have all come to expect from the Browns. What an odd and stupid first round from them. It is really puzzling. The Browns will always be the Browns.

The SeedSing 2018 Mock NFL Draft

As I did last year, today I bring you my first round mock NFL draft for the draft that starts tonight. And, just like last year, it is all a total guess, just like every other person that puts out a mock draft. I'm not going to do any trades or any of that. I'm just going with the original draft order, picking a player and writing a sentence or two as to why I think this player is going to that team. Okay, here goes.

1. Browns- Baker Mayfield. The Browns want a QB and apparently they are down to Mayfield and Josh Allen. I don't think either is going to be a good pro, but I think the Browns will go with Mayfield because he is the "hot" prospect right now. They will regret this pick

2. Giants- Saquaon Barkley. The Giants are going to stick with Eli for another year or two, they get OBJ back, they have an okay defense, but they don't have a solid running back. They will pick the best running back in the draft, and possibly the best player. I think Barkley will be good, but he won't ail what hurts the Giants(cough, cough...Eli)

3. Jets- Josh Rosen. I personally think Rosen is the best QB in the draft, and I think he will fit in just fine in New York. The Jets, despite my claim last year, were solid, but they had to run out Josh McCown as their QB most of last season. Rosen is a major upgrade over McCown.

4. Browns- Bradley Chubb. I have heard that the Browns are thinking about 2 QB's, but even they aren't dumb enough to take 2 in the top 4 picks. This pick they will get right with Chubb. Chubb and Myles Garrett will make for a ferocious defensive end combo, and the Browns defense is the only thing going in the right direction for them right now.

5. Broncos- Josh Allen. Denver should go defense, or trade down, but John Elway is arrogant, and he will take who he considers the best QB in this draft. I think Allen will be the biggest bust of any player in this draft, and the calls for Elway's job will start coming from the Broncos faithful after Allen proves to be a disaster. This kid is not that good

6. Colts- Derwin James. The Colts need just about everything, except a QB, but I feel like they will address defense in this draft. James is an excellent, hard hitting safety that will bring some much needed toughness to that defense. They can get other players, offensive players, later in the draft. They need to address defense early on. Derwin James is going to be good.

7. Bucs- Roquan Smith. The Bucs have, on paper, a good team. They stumbled last year, mainly due to inconsistent offense and poor defense. Smith is the best linebacker in the draft and he will immediately become an elite level tackler at the next level. He really showed out in the title game, and that will continue in the NFL.

8. Bears- Quenton Nelson. The Bears have a few running backs, a QB they "believe in" and young wideouts. They also have a solid defense. They need guys to protect Trubisky, and they will go with who many consider the best lineman in the draft. I don't really know what the Bears are doing, but picking an offensive lineman is always a safe bet

9. 49ers- Denzel Ward. The 49ers will be everyone's "cinderella" team next year, and what they need is defensive backs. They will take Ward, and that kid can be a lockdown corner. He will be a solid addition to a defense that is only getting better

10. Raiders- Mike McGlintchey. The Raiders have a QB, good receivers, a solid run game and a young, yet inconsistent defense. They need offensive line help, and they will take this monster out of South Bend. The kid is big and looks like he will be able to protect David Carr for the next couple seasons.

11. Dolphins- Sam Darnold. The Dolphins are in a tail spin, but they will try to get out of it by taking the player who will slip the farthest. Darnold looks like an NFL QB, knows the heat of California, so Miami won't affect him, and I think this will motivate him to play well. The Dolphins will still be terrible, but they will get their QB of the future

12. Bills- Lamar Jackson. This may seem high to some, but I think it is too low. Jackson is a much better, and taller, version of Tyrod Taylor, and the Bills made the playoffs with him last year. I see Jackson being this draft's Aaron Rodgers. He is going to be a very good pro

13. Washington- Vita Vea. Washington needs a new QB and some receivers, but Vea is too good a D line prospect to pass up in this draft. He will make their defense better, and he will be a guy they can plug in and play right away. This is a steal of a pick

14. Packers- Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Packers need help on defense and they need it bad. They already have Clinton-Dix in their secondary, and they will add Fitzpatrick, and this will be their first step towards having a solid defense with a Rodgers led team. I love Fitzpatrick and I hope he lasts until this pick

15. Cardinals- Mason Rudolph. The Cardinals need a QB, and with all the top guys being picked already, they will reach, and reach hard. Rudolph is an okay QB, but he is not first round talent. He may end up doing well, but he will be pressed into duty too early, and that will hinder his growth

16. Ravens- Tremaine Edmunds. The Ravens will have struck out on a QB and a running back, so they will go defense, trying to get back to what made them so great. Edmunds is a solid linebacker that will have a solid, and long, NFL career. I like this kid

17. Chargers- Da'Ron Payne. The Chargers will find their replacement for Rivers in later rounds, and in the first round, they will choose to bolster their already stellar D line. Payne is big, played at Alabama and is ready for the pros. He may not make headlines, but he will be a good player for a long time

18. Seahawks- Courtland Sutton. The Seahawks have made a choice of what they want to do now, and that is be a high scoring team, so they will go out and get the best receiver in this draft. Sutton is big, has strong hands and runs good routes. He will instantly be their best deep threat, and probably, their best receiver the moment he gets to camp

19. Cowboys- Jaire Alexander. With their running back and QB in place, and some solid receivers, the Cowboys need to address their defense, and mainly their secondary. Alexander is explosively fast and can cover fairly well. It make take a few seasons, but this kid will be a solid corner

20. Lions- Marcus Davenport. I love this kid. He is an awesome edge rusher, explodes when he hits someone and is always ready to play. This will be one of the Lions best picks ever and this kid will be a star. I look at him as a little lesser version of Jadaveon Clowney, and I mean that in the best way possible. Davenport is a beast

21. Bengals- Isiah Wynn. The Bengals need offensive line help, and Wynn will provide it. They really need a new QB and coach, but those are issues for another day. Wynn may not be flashy, but he is a player that a team like the Bengals needs, and they should take him if he is still available at 21

22. Bills- Harold Landry. After hitting a homerun with Jackson at 12, the Bills will take the second best defensive end in the draft. This is actually turning out to be a decent draft for them. Landry was great in college, coachable and fun to watch. All that translate to the next level. He will replace Mario Williams with relative ease

23. Patriots- Frank Ragnow. The Patriots may have lost some running backs and receivers this offseason, but losing some lineman was the biggest blow. They need a flexible, young and talented O lineman to help out Brady, and Ragnow is all those things. This is a very Patriots-esque pick but what else would you expect.

24. Panthers- Calvin Ridley. Cam Newton needs someone, anyone that can get space and catch deep balls, and Ridley is the guy for the job. He made Jalen Hurts look like a competent QB at times last year, so just imagine how good he will be with a real NFL QB. I love this fit and I hope this happens

25. Titans- DJ Moore. The Titans took a big swing taking Corey Davis 5th overall last year, and that didn't work out. This draft they will get another receiver, but I like Moore more than Davis. He is shiftier, faster and has that quick twitch that scouts love. He was also a punt returner in college too, so the kid can play. He will give Mariota a much needed threat at wideout

26. Falcons- Rashann Evans. The Falcons have a QB, they have a run game, and even with all this recent Julio Jones stuff, they have a good receiving corps. What they don't have is a great defense. They have a good one, but not great. Evans will be a step in the positive direction. He's another Alabama kid that is big, strong and smart. He is a born football player

27. Saints- Hayden Hurst. The Saints have pretty much everything on offense except for a solid tight end. Sure, Coby Fleener was fine last year, but nothing like when Jimmy Graham was there. Hurst can be the next Jimmy Graham for them I was going to go defense, but the Saints defense was okay last year. Hurst was just too juicy a prospect to pass up on at this spot

28. Steelers- Taven Bryant. The Steelers need help on defense, and even though Florida stunk last year, this kid was a bright spot on the defense. I remember seeing him early in the year against Michigan, and he was the only player that scared me going up against them. He is big and good and he will help the Steelers right away

29. Jags- Kolton Miller. The Jags have one of the best defenses in all of football. They have a great run game. They have solid receivers and they have Blake Borltes. Now, they need to get better on the O line. Miller will do that for them. He will step in and be a starter right away and he will pave lanes for Fournette to blast through. This is a good pick for the Jags.

30. Vikings- Will Hernandez. The Vikings seem to think they have it all now with Kirk Cousins, so why not go O line here? They'll have Cousins, they'll get Dalvin Cook back they have a good receiving corps and their defense is top notch. They need to go with the best player at a position they need, and Hernandez fits that mold. Easy pick

31. Patriots- Derius Guice. I said earlier that the Patriots lost some running backs, and if they don't trade this pick they will get a real solid back in Guice. He is explosive, can catch and can block. This would be an ideal situation for him

32. Eagles- Sony Michel. The Eagles are the champs, and they have it all. So, they will go out and take the best available player, plug him into Legarette Blount's vacancy and have that three headed monster at running back again. The Eagles have the luxury of just picking whoever they want, and that is precisely what they will do

Okay, that is my 2018 first round mock NFL draft. I'm sure I'll be wrong on about 90 percent of it, but it is still a fun exercise to try and put college players in good pro spots. I enjoy doing this very much.

The Idiot Bears Liven Up a Competent NFL Draft

Artist Depiction of Bears fans today

This past Wednesday I made a bold claim and assumed that the Browns would make another horrific draft mistake. It is in their nature to screw things up. They have not been relevant or even competitive pretty much since they came back to the NFL.

In a big time shocker, the Browns made the right choice and took Myles Garrett number one overall. I was surprised, but the pick also gave me a little bit of confidence that maybe Hue Jackson and the Browns front office are possibly going in the right direction. Later in the first round they took my guy, Jabrill Peppers, and to be honest, I like this pick by them. I liked it even more when I heard Hue Jackson say that they will most definitely use him on offense. They also took David Njoku, who was the second best tight end in the draft, a few picks after Peppers. The Browns actually made competent choices that could benefit them in the long run.

With that being said, there were some head scratchers for sure in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. The receiver from Western Michigan, Corey Davis, going number 5 overall to the Titans was weird. They could have gotten him easily at 18. Then there was a run on receivers in the first round, which I thought this class of receivers was very thin. Mike Williams went at 7 and John Ross went at 9. That was crazy. I thought, contrary to a lot of NFL "insiders", that McCaffery going at number 8 was a bit of a reach. I do think he will be good, but number 8, I do not get it. Sure, he is a decent fit in Carolina, but he still has a ways to go before he is a real threat all over the field.

As far as some good things I liked from the first round, OJ Howard to Tampa was incredible for both parties. Howard gives them what they need at the tight end position, and I think he immediately makes them a perennial playoff contender. Leonard Fournette to the Jaguars is great. I'm sure they will get a QB in later rounds to usurp Blake Bortles, but for the time being, they have Fournette, and I think he is going to be an All Pro from day one. Jamal Adams to the Jets was a sound pick. He was my personal favorite non Wolverine in the draft, and I think he will fit in well in New York. I also liked both the Chiefs and Texans trading up to get their QB's of the future. Mahomes should fit in nicely in Kansas City, and he will get to learn for at least one year. Deshaun Watson to the Texans is a homerun. The Texans need a QB, and I think they found one that will help them become a real threat to the Patriots in the AFC. The Titans did make a great pick, taking Adoree Jackson at 18. He's an awesome cornerback and a great returner. He will help them immediately. I also really like Jarrad Davis to the Lions. He is a good linebacker and will help that defense get much better.

All of this leads me to the biggest surprise of the night. First off, I love Solomon Thomas to the 49ers. He was the best interior defensive lineman in the draft, and he will be the cornerstone for the 49ers young defense. And, all they had to do was trade down one spot to number three to get him. You may be reading this and asking, why did they only have to trade down one pick? Well, the Bears had their hearts set on a player, and they gave up a whole lot to the 49ers to draft this certain player. The Bears gave up a lot of future picks, let John Lynch fleece them and made just a horrible, terrible, stupid and appalling selection at number 2. They gave up all of this to take Mitch Trubisky.

You read that right.

The Bears gave up the farm to take Mitch god damn Trubisky. I am on record, both on the podcast and the site, saying that I think Trubisky will be a bust of Ryan Leaf proportions. Also, why did the Bears even need to take a QB? They gave Mike Glennon a 3 year, 45 million dollar deal this offseason, signed Mark Sanchez and I believe that Matt Barkley is still on their roster. I know those guys aren't the best QB's in the world, but Glennon was once a starter, Mark Sanchez has fallen on rough times, but was a capable QB at one point and Matt Barkley looked halfway decent at the end of last season. So I ask again, why give up so much to draft Mitch Trubisky at number 2 overall? This is bafflingly stupid. I loved the reactions that were all over the internet last night of Bears fans reacting to this pick. It was as funny as some great comedies that I have watched in the past couple of years.

The Bears are absolutely going to regret this. The fans that like this pick will make their voices known very loudly at home games to put Trubisky in, no matter how well any of the other QB's on their roster are playing. The front office will push to make him play because they will want to see their high pick on the field. Trubisky is going to stink when he does get in there. He is simply not ready for the job of being a starting QB in the NFL, let alone the starter for a once proud blue blood NFL franchise. This was stupefying, but also made for some great laughs.

Being a Packers fan, I'm thrilled that one of their chief rivals made a pick this bad. But, for friends and family that are Bears fans, I feel for you guys and girls. This will not wash out the bad taste of Jay Cutler, and if I were one of the other QB's on the roster, I'd be very pissed, especially if I were Mike Glennon. This was, by far, the worst draft decision I have seen since Ryan Leaf was taken second overall by the Chargers in the 1997 draft. What an abomination.

The SeedSing 2017 Mock NFL Draft

Tomorrow night is the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Today, for the first time, I will do my own version of a "mock" draft. This mock will look different from other mocks that are out there. I will predict what I think will happen, not what should happen, including trades and all. I am only going to do the first round as well. I love college football, I think everyone knows this by now, but a 7 round mock is way too much. I'll give one or two sentences as to why I see the particular team drafting or trading their player or pick. I'm very excited about writing this, so let's get to it.

1. Cleveland Browns- Mitch Trubisky. Once again, the Browns will find a way to screw this up because that is what they do. This will be no fault of Hue Jackson's, but I guarantee that the Browns front office want a "sexy" pick, and not the sure thing. Trubisky is going to be a bust on the level of Ryan Leaf, so why wouldn't it be the Browns that make this horrific selection.

2. San Francisco 49ers- Myles Garrett. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will be the big winners from the Browns blunder. Garrett is the safest bet in this entire draft. He is also the best player too. Shanahan has time to build, and he will get his QB eventually and install his offense, but the chance to take Garrett will be too enticing, and the correct choice, and he will be a corner stone for this new era of 49ers defense. Absolute homerun pick for the 49ers.

3. Chicago Bears- Jamal Adams. Adams is the best secondary player in the draft, and while the Bears need help everywhere on the field, Adams can come in immediately and solidify the defensive backfield. He may be a bit raw in coverage, but he is a hard hitter, he's coachable, and he is a workaholic. Adams will be a very good player for a long time in the NFL, and the Bears will be lucky to have him.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars- Leonard Fournette. I was going to go defense here, but the Jaguars actually have a decent defense. Fournette is the best running back in the draft, and while Blake Bortles is atrocious, Fournette can immediately take the pressure off him. I love Fournette and think he can be a better Adrian Peterson. He is big, fast and will run over dudes left and right. Fournette is going to be great.

5. Tennessee Titans- Solomon Thomas. The titans are a team on the rise. They have a QB, a running back, a decent O line and some good defensive players. They do need receivers, but no one on this draft warrants this high a pick at receiver. Solomon Thomas is a great defensive tackle, and he will help the Titans pass rush and in run support right away. Thomas played in a pro style defense at Stanford, so he is ready for the NFL. He will be a very good defensive lineman for awhile, and this will only make the Titans better.

6. New York Jets- Malik Hooker. The Jets need help everywhere, and I should expect them to take a QB or receiver this high because they have made some terrible picks as of late, but they will look to shore up their secondary right away. Hooker is a good defensive back from the University of Ohio State, but he does have hamstring issues. This could hurt him in the long run, but he is a ball hawking safety that the Jets could build their secondary around over the next few years. Time will tell with him, but he can help as a rookie.

7. Los Angeles Chargers- Marshon Lattimore. Two University of Ohio State players in the a row, and cornerbacks for that matter. The Chargers do need a QB to replace Phil Rivers soon and they need receivers, but they will look at defense this high in the draft. Lattimore is a fine corner and should start right away. I do not know how good he will be, is he more Stephon Gilmore, or any number of corners that can't translate college success to the NFL? We will have to see, but the Chargers will take a chance.

8. Carolina Panthers- Johnathan Allen. The Panthers do need offensive help for Cam Newton, but with Allen being the best D lineman in the draft, that will be too enticing to pass up. He can plug up the holes in their rush defense, and I think he will be a great pro. He will solidify that line which will open things up for the linebackers and secondary in Carolina. The Panthers will be very happy with Allen "falling" to them in this draft.

9. Cincinnati Bengals- Hassan Reddick. I see some saying that Rueben Foster, the linebacker from Alabama going here, but after his incident at the combine, and the fact that Reddick is better, I think this is a perfect spot for Reddick to go. He can start from day one, and will shore up the linebacking unit. He is a good tackler, can get better in coverage, but will work on his game and fit in very well in the NFL. I love Reddick and he is going to be a good foundation for the Bengals defense.

10. Buffalo Bills- Trade. The Bills have a QB, a good running back, a decent receiver, a good line and a decent defense. I think they can trade this pick for some later picks and maybe even a veteran. They don't need much in a draft, and I think they will trade this pick away. They need to replace Stephon Gilmore, so maybe they trade the pick for a vet cornerback and some later picks.

11. New Orleans Saints- Do whatever you can to trade for Malcom Butler. The Saints need help on defense, and Butler immediately does that. He is a very good corner and will instantly make one side of the field unplayable. He will shut down big time receivers, and make this team instantly better. They need Butler, and I think it will take the 11th pick to get him.

12. Cleveland Browns- John Ross. With their blunder at number one, the Browns will panic and take the fastest guy in the draft because they will assume that they need to pair Trubisky with a receiver. This will be brutal for both guys. Ross will not get a chance to use his gifts because the Browns are so bad, and Trubisky is not going to be good. The Browns 2017 draft will just continue to get worse and worse. They are going to blow this draft.

13. Arizona Cardinals- Deshaun Watson. The Cardinals need a QB to replace Carson Palmer, who maybe only has one or 2 more years, and Watson is the best QB in the entire draft. I think Bruce Arians realizes this, and he will pounce on Watson. I love Deshaun Watson, and I feel like this will be a perfect situation for him. He can sit back for one or 2 seasons. learn the NFL speed and game, and come in and be a very good starter after backing up a decent veteran QB. This is a perfect fit in this draft.

14. Philadelphia Eagles- Takkarist McKinley. The Eagles do not need any offensive players, but they do need defense, and McKinley would be a good fit for them at outside linebacker. He is a good pass rusher and would fit in perfectly. Honestly they could take any defensive player available, but I like McKinley best of the remaining defensive players.

15. Indianapolis Colts- Cam Robinson. The Colts need something everywhere, except QB, but they need to protect that QB first and foremost. Robinson is the best O lineman in the draft. I hate his love for guns, but the NFL and the Colts will overlook that because they need protection for Andrew Luck. Robinson can do that, and the Colts will take him as fast as they can.

16. Baltimore Ravens- OJ Howard. The Ravens need some kind of help offensively, and OJ Howard is the best tight end in the draft. He is big, strong, fast and can catch the ball. He will help out Flacco, who I think is awful, but he will make Flacco look as good as he can. This will be a very good pick for the Ravens and John Harbaugh. He could help put them back in the playoffs very quickly.

17. The Washington Football Team- Derek Barnett. Washington needs help everywhere on defense, and while I think Barnett will be just average, he will help out on the line. He is an okay pass rusher, and I think plugging him in on the D line will work for a bit. Barnett needs to care a little more about getting better, but he is very talented, and Washington won't let him go past the 17th pick.

18. Tennessee Titans- Mike Williams. Tennessee inexplicably has 2 first round picks, and 18 is where they will get some help on the outside. Williams is a big, strong receiver, that runs nice routes and can catch the ball He will become one of Mariota's primary guys right away. Williams proved how good he was in last year's title game, and theTitans will get a very good value pick here.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Christian McCaffery. McCaffery is a very versatile running back that will also be able to play the slot. He is exactly what Winston and the rest of that offense will need to push them back to a possible playoff berth. Tampa has good players everywhere on offense, except running back, and McCaffery will help make the running game a threat.

20. Denver Broncos- Trade for a QB. Somehow, some way, the Broncos need to offload this pick to get a QB. They have pretty much everything else, including a great, great defense. But, they need someone to com in and be a competent QB. I feel like making a draft pick now would be a waste. They should go out and try to get someone like Jimmy Garropolo or AJ McCarron, or someone else's backup to come in and game manage. That is what Denver needs.

21. Detroit Lions- Charles Harris. Harris is a great edge rusher that played on a bad Missouri football team. He was the lone standout, and that will pay off by him being a first round pick. He will pair great with Ezekial Ansah and they will form a very good pass rush duo. Detroit should need very little time to make this pick.

22. Miami Dolphins- Zach Cunningham. The Dolphins are set on offense, but they could use some defensive help. Cunningham reminds me a lot of Harris from Missouri, except he is a linebacker that played on a mediocre Vanderbilt team. But, he was awesome and I think the Dolphins would love to have him come in and play for them. He is a very good linebacker that can cover guys out of the backfield a little bit. This pick will really help the Dolphins.

23. New York Giants- Ryan Ramcyzk. The Giants need help on the O line, and Ramcyzk will do his best to help them. He is the second best offensive lineman in this draft, behind Cam Robinson, but this is a weak O line class. That being said, that is what the Giants need, and they will snatch up Ramcyzk late in the first round.

24. Oakland- Just take the best player available. The Raiders are pretty much set everywhere right now. They have a franchise QB, they are getting Marshawn Lynch, they have Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, a great O line and a passable defense. If they do need anything, I'd say take David Njoku, the tight end from Miami. He would be a good fit and I think Carr would throw to him a lot. He's not a great blocker, but he is a very good pas catcher.

25. Houston- Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is the second best QB in the draft, and the Texans will snatch a QB if Mahomes or Watson is available. He might have to play right away which could be a hindrance, but he could sit behind Tom Savage for a half a season, or even a whole one, then take over. He looks like he could be a good QB, and I think the Texans would be very pleased if he was still available at 25.

26. Seattle- Forrest Lamp. Seattle needs offensive line help, and while some think Lamp is the best lineman available, I do not, he will help on the O line right away. This team cannot protect Russell Wilson, but Lamp can help with that. Seattle has other needs, i.e., running back, receiver and in the secondary, but O line is their most glaring weakness.

27. Kansas City- Dalvin Cook. The Chiefs need a QB. Alex Smith just cannot get it done, but they can go out and sign a veteran, or wait until later rounds to draft one. That leaves them with a need at running back. Jamaal Charles cannot stay healthy, and I think Cook would be a good fit in KC. He is very fast and waits for holes to open up before he explodes through them. Cook would be a big step up at the running back position for the Chiefs.

28. Dallas- Jabrill Peppers. As much as this pains me, I love Peppers, but I loathe the Cowboys, he fits what they need. Peppers is a versatile defender that the Cowboys can plug into a lot of spots in their secondary. He can also help in their return game. The Cowboys are set on offense, but they need a lot of help on defense, especially in the secondary, and they will go out and get Peppers, "diluted sample" be damned.

29. Green Bay- Get a legit running back. I want them to trade for someone that is already a pro. As much as I like Ty Montgomery and Christine Michael, they are not starting running backs. They are backups at best, and Montgomery is a receiver anyway. Do whatever you have to do and go out and get a legit running back. That is the one position that could put the Packers over the top.

30. Pittsburgh- TJ Watt. The Steelers have a great offense and a bad defense. While he is not his brother, I watched a lot of TJ Watt this year, and he is a good pass rusher, a great tackler and has a "high motor". He seems like a Steeler already, and I feel like this is a match made in heaven for both the team and player.

31. Atlanta- Taco Charlton. The Falcons need some more pass rushers, and Charlton is a very good one. I watched him get better for four straight years at Michigan, and I think he would be a perfect fir for the Falcons. Let us not forget that they had a 25 point lead in the Super Bowl, and I feel like some more edge rushers would be great for them and would have helped them keep their lead. Charlton got better for four years, and I do not even think he is at his best yet. He will only get better.

32. New Orleans- Just like with the 11th pick, do whatever they can to get Malcom Butler. Trade both these picks if they have to. They need veteran help on defense and no one is better, and possibly available, than Butler. Do anything and everything possible to get Butler New Orleans. That is what you need.

There you have it, my first ever mock draft. I hope everyone has some thoughts and feelings about my choices, and if you do, please let me know in the comment section. Tomorrow starts the ten thousand year long coverage of the 2017 draft on ESPN, so tune in to that to see if I'm right about the Browns making horrible choices, or if they do the right thing and take Garrett first overall. This was fun.

Who are the Real Top Players in the NFL Draft?

We have our own data to make semi-intelligent guesses.

The NFL draft is 2 days from now. Well, the first round that is. ESPN drags this damn thing out for like 5 days, but the big time guys will be coming off the board in the next couple of days. Tomorrow I will have my version of a "mock" draft for everyone. Today though, I want to talk about some of the prospects that are getting a little too much attention, or not enough.

First off, lets go straight to a few guys that played for my team, Michigan. What Jordan Lewis did was inexcusable and despicable. To put your hands on a woman is one of the, if not the, worst things a man can do. That should never, ever be tolerated, and I hope his stock falls massively in the draft. This was very upsetting to me because he seemed like a good kid. Then, he goes out and hits a woman. That is wrong on so many levels. It is frightening and appalling. Shame on you Jordan Lewis.

The next Wolverine I want to talk about is Jabrill Peppers. Yesterday it was reported that he had a "diluted sample" at the combine. Why is it coming out now, I have no idea. But, he has this "diluted sample". I have read and read about what this means, and I have to say, I do not think it is that big a deal. There are no steroids or illegal drugs that we know of yet. His people said that he was feeling ill and drank a ton of water while flying in for the combine. Again, I do not know if that is true, or why that would dilute someone's urine. All this being said, I feel like the people at ESPN, who have been covering this upcoming draft for what seems like years now, are trying to find anything and everything they can to discredit Peppers. I think he is very raw as a corner or safety, but I watched him play for the last 2 years, and that kid can play. He is never going to be on the level of the Ed Reed, Eric Berry and Troy Paulamalu, but I think he will be a fine nickel corner/safety, and a great return specialist.

As I said, I feel like ESPN has gone out of their way to chastise Peppers since he declared for the draft. They only had one story on Reuben Foster, who was asked to leave the combine because of how he handled himself during interviews at the combine, but he is an Alabama kid. ESPN will not attack the "almighty Nick Saban". Same can be said for Cam Robinson. Robinson is probably the best offensive lineman in the draft, but let us not forget, no matter how much ESPN refuses to talk about it, that he was caught in the offseason with unlicensed firearms. I'd rather have a kid that has a diluted piss test than a kid that had unlicensed firearms on my team. But, if you watch any ESPN coverage, you'd think Peppers broke the law and did the most horrific thing imaginable. But, their coverage of Foster and Robinson is only about how great of talents they both are, not the fact that Foster had to be removed from the combine and that Robinson likes to dick around with guns. It's almost like ESPN and Alabama are each dipping their hands in each other's honey pot. It is really rather disturbing.

I want to move on.

Lets look at the QB class this year next. I think that Deshaun Watson is unequivocally the best QB prospect in the draft. He won on the biggest stage during his college career, and the year he didn't win, it wasn't his fault, he was dynamic. He may throw a lot of picks, but so did Brett Favre and Tony Romo and Cam Newton. Watson is an incredible talent, and I think he will be a great pro. The fact that the draft "experts" rate a guy like Mitch Trubsiky ahead of him is laughable to me. Trubisky only played one full season, and when he was in a big game, he tightened up and looked afraid. He didn't play up to his competition. He did not win anything of importance his lone year as the starter at UNC. He has the look of a Tim Couch or Christian Ponder to me. Patrick Mahomes will be good, as long as he goes to a team where he can sit for a year or two and learn from a seasoned vet. He played in that crazy air raid offense at Texas Tech, so if he can have that time to be a backup and learn the NFL game, I think he can be a quality starter. I have no faith in DeShone Kizer. That kid is out of his god damn mind with the quotes he's been making lately. I'm all for guys that believe in themselves, but this kid has done nothing to back up that talk. He is a average to mediocre QB. I do not think he will ever start in the NFL.

Running back is about 2 dudes and then everyone else. Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffery are the 2 running backs in this draft. They can both be transformative players for whoever takes them. I like Fournette more, but McCaffery should be a good pro too. Guys like D'Onta Foreman, Dalvin Cook and Jordan Howard will be okay pros, but not on the level that Fournette and McCaffery have the ability to be. I will not discuss the other back that everyone in the sports media is trying to redeem.

Receiver is very ho hum to me. The only guy that stands out as a first round talent is John Ross from Washington. He is lighting fast and can change the game as a returner as well.

Flipping over to the defensive side, this draft is stacked with defensive talent. As far a D line goes, I love Johnathan Allen and Solomon Thomas, just like everyone else. The linebackers are good, led by Hassan Reddick. Secondary is loaded, but I think Jamal Adams from LSU is the stand out, along with Adoree Jackson. I've heard a lot of talk about a couple of the University of Ohio State(I know what I wrote) guys, Malik Hooker and some other corner who's name escapes me because I hate that team. Hooker is good, but he is oft injured. He had hamstring surgery in high school. I've never heard of that before. Both these guys will go in round one though. But, if I had a pick, I'd do whatever I could to get Adams. He is a workaholic that will only get better with professional coaching. And how Adoree Jackson is not a lock first rounder is baffling to me. He is a better version of Jabrill Peppers, and I am as big a Peppers fan as there is. Jackson is a very physical corner and can cover. He is also an excellent returner as well. He is going to be great.

These are just some of my quick thoughts on some guys I like and others I'm not so high on. Come back tomorrow for my "mock" draft to see where I think these kids will end up, or what I think certain teams should do in the first round.
